‘Beauty Shop’ gets new characters
More fun characters added to “Beauty Shop.” Joining Queen Latifah, Alicia Silverstone and Mena Suvari will be Alfre Woodard as Miss Josephine, an eccentric hairstylist who constantly spouts Maya Angelou poetry; Andie MacDowell as a conservative Southern socialist who has a rebirth; and Bryce Wilson as a former truck driver turned hairdresser. This should really be a romp.
Just a few weeks ago I watched “The Sound of Music” for the umpteenth time, and as usual was entranced not only by Julie Andrews and the music, but by Christopher Plummer as the virile and magnetic Captain Von Trapp.
Plummer’s career has been long and impressive, and he has grown into more mature roles quite gracefully. His next will be as Cardinal Bernard Law in “Our Fathers” for Showtime. This about the Boston cardinal who failed to remove abusive priests from the ministry, leading to his subsequent resignation.
Aside to Pauline J. of Cairo, Ill. No. Ashley Judd does not live in Hollywood. She chooses to live in Tennessee with her husband and commutes whenever necessary. And yes, she is a Phi Beta Kappa. She also graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky, where she majored in French. You can see her now in “Twisted” for Paramount pics.
AND to those of you who have asked, “Whatever happened to Debra Winger?” — here’s the answer: She will star in and produce a Lifetime Film titled “Dawn Anna,” about a single mother of four who suffers from a brain disease. She recovers, but is then confronted with a mortality crisis with one of her children. Not a very happy mood piece.
BUT, for a lot of laughs, fun and a delightfully juicy read, try Plum Sykes’ “Bergdorf Blondes” (Miramax Books). It’s a hooty romp through the lives of the very rich, what they buy, where they wine and dine, the posh places they visit all over the world, and a fun and interesting plot woven amid the diamonds and Bentleys.

•Aside to Warren G. of Macon, Ga. I do know that Ashley Olsen dates Columbia University quarterback Matt Kaplan, but I really don’t know how serious it is. They’re a cute couple.
•If you’re taking a walk in the Hollywood Hills, you might just bump into Leonardo and Gisele walking their pups, Hazel and Willie.
•And while on the subject of doggies, Charlize Theron is owned by a henna-colored cocker spaniel named Denver.
•It’s always on again, off again between Naomi Watts and Heath Ledger. Looks like they like to fight so they can “kiss and make up.”
•Samuel L. Jackson has a degree in dramatic arts from Morehouse College in Atlanta.
•That was Marlon Brando, weighing more than 200 pounds, exiting the UCLA Medical Center.
•Jamie Lee Curtis is Lady Haden-Guest? Her husband, Christopher Guest, inherited his grandfather’s English Peerage title.
