Man indicted for false claim

PITTSBURGH — A man was indicted Tuesday for falsely claiming his ex-wife died in the Sept. 11 attacks in order to collect money from a fund for victims.

Stephen Daniel Laskowski, 57, lied about having children — a son and triplets — so he could claim more money, prosecutors said.

“Mr. Laskowski’s attempt to obtain compensation from the victim compensation fund by fraudulently representing himself and his circumstances is not just criminal, but it is tremendously disrespectful to the family members of those who were killed and the individuals who were injured during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,” U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said.
