John Foster

Spokane

Funeral for John Raymond Foster, 87, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Foster, who was born in Roundup, Mont., died May 14.

He moved to Spokane in 1928, and in 1935 he graduated from North Central High School.

In 1941 he was inducted into the Army and served four years in Europe.

He returned home and worked in personnel for the government at Grand Coulee Dam and several other Washington locations. He also worked in Bismarck, N.D., and wound up his federal career as a personnel officer for the Internal Revenue Service’s Alaska district in 1964.

He worked for an electrical contracting firm in San Francisco from 1964 to 1975 before working for the Bechtel Corp. as an administrative assistant to the project manager on the Alaska Pipeline.

He retired in 1983, moved back to Spokane and bought his first home.

Mr. Foster enjoyed fishing and attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Spokane.

Survivors include a sister, Beatrice Evans of Mesilla, N.M.

Peggy (Schroeder) Lane

Greenacres

No service will be held for Peggy A. (Schroeder) Lane, 84, at her request. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Lane, a former 47-year resident of Valleyford, died last Wednesday at her home in Greenacres. She was born in Spokane.

She worked at the Officers Club in San Diego during World War II.

Upon returning to Spokane she worked as a telephone operator at Pacific Northwest Bell.

She was a longtime retail clerk at Vordahls Dime Store in Dishman and a grocery clerk at Albertsons at Sprague and Havana.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Claude.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Lane of San Diego; a daughter, Dana Marlow of Millwood; seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Joan Nortell

Spokane

Funeral for Joan A. Nortell, 72, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nortell, who was born in Choteau, Mont., died May 13. She spent most of her life as a Spokane resident.

She worked many years at North Bowl and enjoyed bowling.

She also enjoyed gardening, playing pool and cards.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph.

Survivors include two daughters, Jody Locnikar and Jan Vigil; a son, Doug; a sister, Ella Berg; a brother, Rodney DeRusha; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morning Star Boys Ranch or the Union Gospel Mission.

Iva (Selleg) Bainard

Spokane

Memorial service for Iva K. (Selleg) Flatt Bainard, 95, will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Rockwood at Hawthorne, 101 E. Hawthorne Road. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bainard, who was born in Valley, Wash., died May 15.

She attended local schools and graduated from Washington State University, doing graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Bainard was employed in food service management for local elementary schools.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a volunteer teacher at its Barton School.

She was active in Washington State School Food Service Association and served terms in most elective state offices, including president. She was a registered parliamentarian with the National Association of Parliamentarians.

Survivors include a son, William Flatt of Spokane; a daughter, Linda Hedrick of Mesquite, Texas; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Peggy Alex

Fruitland, Wash.

Visitation for Peggy J. Alex, will be today from 2 to 5 p.m. at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Hunters, Wash.

Mrs. Alex died May 13.

Born in Bakersville, Calif., she grew up in California, where she attended school.

She married Clarence Alex in 1953 in Davenport, and the couple made their home in the Fruitland area.

Mrs. Alex was a homemaker. She was a member of the Enterprise Ladies Club and Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Charles Alex of Springdale, Wash., Patrick Alex of Fruitland, Dorothy Alex of Spokane and William Alex of Tangent, Ore.; two brothers, Joe Pope of Arizona and Steve Pope of Arkansas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marvel (Murray) Gilman

Kellogg

Graveside inurnment for Marvel E. Gilman, 88, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gilman died Saturday.

She was born in Grassy Butte, N.D.

Mrs. Gilman moved to the Silver Valley in the early 1930s and married Benjamin Gilman in 1938. He preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Darlene Mendy of Smelterville, Idaho, Charlene Barker of Montana, and Ramona Mendy and Jessie Stout, both of Kellogg; five sons, Walt Gilman of Montana, Bob Gilman of Coeur dAlene, Rick Gilman of Post Falls, Larry Gilman of Smelterville, Idaho, and Glen Gilman of California; 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Joann (Watson) Porath

Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Joann Porath, 65, at the familys request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur dAlene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Porath died Monday.

She was born in Sacramento.

Mrs. Porath grew up in Rose Lake, Idaho, and attended school there.

In 1960 while working in Woodland, Calif., she met her future husband, Barry Porath. They moved to Coeur dAlene and married. They moved back to California for employment purposes and lived in Santa Clara for five years until returning to North Idaho.

The couple lived in Cougar Gulch for 16 years before settling in the Harbor Island area 20 years ago.

Mrs. Porath enjoyed boating and personal watercraft, and spending winters at her sisters house in Quartzsite, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bill Porath of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Mark Porath of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Lori Porath, and a sister, Alice Orr, both of Coeur dAlene; and six grandchildren.

JoAnn (Howard) Hape

Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for JoAnn (Howard) Hape, 58, was held Monday at Yates Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Hape died Friday.

She was born in Eatonville, Wash.

Mrs. Hape grew up and attended school in Eatonville and Puyallup, Wash., and worked at IBM in Renton, Wash., for many years.

In 1978 she married Robert Hape.

They moved to Gusher, Utah, in 1979, and she worked at J.C. Penney.

They settled in Hayden in 1985, and she worked at Farmer’s Insurance in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Hape was a member of Lake City Community Church.

She enjoyed many hobbies.

Survivors include her husband, Bob; three children, David Sperry of Moscow, Shane Hape of Post Falls and Sandra Sperry of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, David Howard of Lyle, Wash.; two sisters, Donna Bartlett of Port Orchard, Wash., and Della Minton of Roy, Wash.; and two grandchildren

Albert Mohr

Spokane

No service will be held for Albert Mohr, 74, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mr. Mohr, who was born in Hardin, Mont., died May 12.

He graduated from Central Valley High School in 1948 and attended Whitworth College.

He played AAA baseball in Wisconsin. He was a Little League baseball coach in Spokane for many years.

Mr. Mohr was a member of the Steelworkers Union for many years.

He enjoyed traveling and exercising and had worked with troubled youth as a guardian ad litem at Crosswalk.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; and a stepson, Don Shaffer.
