WACO, Texas — Cristin Vitek set an NCAA record for strikeouts in a game with 28 in 16 innings to lead Baylor to a 1-0 victory over North Carolina in an NCAA tournament game Thursday night.

Vitek threw 185 pitches, 139 for strikes, and had a no-hitter going into the 11th inning.

She set an NCAA record when she recorded her 27th strikeout in the top of the 15th and added one more in the top of the 16th.

The previous record was set by Michele Granger of California against Oregon on March 20, 1993, and tied by Amy Kyler of Cleveland State in a game against Illinois-Chicago on May 3, 1997.

Vitek also broke the NCAA tournament single-game record of 21 strikeouts and the Big 12 Conference single-game strikeout record of 23.
