POST FALLS – Buck Knives Inc. will begin construction this spring on a 128,000-square-foot plant in the Riverbend Commerce Park.

The new plant will open in early 2005, and hire about 150 people, according to CJ Buck, company president.

Buck Knives, a 102-year-old maker of sport-utility knives, announced last year that it would move from El Cajon, Calif., to Post Falls. Company officials cited lower costs for electricity and labor, which it needs to remain competitive with foreign imports.

“From the beginning of our exploration of possible sites to relocate, Post Falls delivered the most advantages and best answered the challenges Buck was facing,” Chairman Chuck Buck said in a statement.

Buck Knives’ corporate office and production facilities are involved in the move. The company’s marketing and sales offices will remain in San Diego.

G.L. Voigt Development Co. of Idaho Falls is part of Buck Knives’ new building development team. Voigt Development has headed several other projects in the area, including two call centers for Center Partners. Steed Construction is the general contractor for the new building. The architect is Habitec Inc. of Eagle, Idaho.

Buck Knives will offer factory tours to the public in its new location by next summer, Chuck Buck said.
