Workshop on living simply

Wisdomworks is offering a workshop titled “Living Simply on Earth” to women of all ages at the Sabbath Space, 4324 N. Jefferson St.

Presented by Roberta Lamanna, SNJM, and Rosemary Thielman, SNJM, the workshop is designed as a reflective experience to help participants become aware of their connection with the Earth and deepen their sense of the presence of the holy in the rhythm of all life.

Workshops will be offered twice on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Author of book on Islam to read

Spokane author Sarah Conover will read from her new book, “Ayat Jamilah: Beautiful Signs, A Treasury of Islamic Wisdom for Children and Parents” (Eastern Washington University Press, 276 pages, $19.95 paper) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

Conover is also the author of “Kindness: A Treasury of Buddhist Wisdom and Stories for Children” (EWU Press, 2001) and co-author of “Daughters of the Desert: Stories of Remarkable Women From the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions” (Skylight Paths Press, 2003).

Her new book, co-written with longtime Muslim educator Freda Crane, is a far-ranging exploration of Islamic culture from China to Tanzania. Illustrations from the book by local artist Valerie Wahl will be on display at Auntie’s.

Baha’i celebration open to public

Members of the Baha’i Faith in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene will celebrate the Declaration of the Bab, which marks the beginning of the faith.

A celebratory program will be today at the Center Pointe building, 1408 N. Washington St., from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Bab was born in 1819. In 1944, the Bab declared his mission to be the forerunner of the promised of all religions.

The program is free.

Book sale a benefit

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, is holding a benefit sale of books on a wide variety of subjects this weekend.

The sale, which will benefit for the church’s ways and means committee, will be today from 2 to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Rummage sale

Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd., is holding a rummage sale today to benefit its high school youth group’s retreat. Items for sale include housewares, clothes and seasonal decorations. The sale will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the church.
