WV baseball at regionals in Yakima

Members of West Valley’s baseball team have been no strangers to success, back to their days of youth ball.

Finally, as high schoolers, the Eagles have cracked the field of 16 for the State 3A baseball playoffs.

Not as fortunate was East Valley, whose finest season in years was ended prematurely by a pair of 5-4 district playoff losses.

The previous three years under coach Don O’Neal, the Eagles (11-12) were knocked out in the first round of regional playoffs.

This year, as the District 8 top seed, they won two of three regional playoff games and today are part of a regional field in Yakima that includes unbeaten Selah (23-0), Tumwater (16-7), and its 1 p.m. foe Skyline (16-7).

After beating Ellensburg, but losing 11-10 to West Valley of Yakima, the Eagles ousted Sunnyside 7-3 to earn their state berth.

Kyle Arnold pitched the win, improving his season record to 7-2, and scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. WV got two hits from Greg Bradley, including his first home run, during the victory.

After a slow start this year, Tyler Hauschild finished the year on a tear with a .491 Greater Spokane League batting average, including a league-high six home runs. He had 20 runs batted in. James Edwards was among the league leaders in doubles.

EV (18-5) reached the District 8 4A finals with a 7-2 win over Shadle Park and led North Central 4-0 after five innings for a berth to regionals.

A five-run sixth proved the Knights undoing in that loss and on Tuesday at four-run first inning by Shadle Park could not be entirely overcome in the game for the second regional berth.

The team, tough defensively season-long, committed six errors during the loss.

Winds hamper medal play

Medal play for Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Golf Club members was conducted under blustery conditions resulting in higher than usual scores.

Rose Jones, however, didn’t have too much trouble, shooting an 81 in A flight to lead all golfers.

Honey Conlon shot 100 in B flight, Marie Nelson had 106 in C, and Virginia Jones won D flight low gross.

Net winners were Billie Etter, Patsy Lynn and Jean Hatcher with 81 in A flight, Reiko Takamori with 80 in B, and Sue Meyer with 86 in D.

Competition tight at Painted Hills

Weekly golf outing for Painted Hills Ladies Club golfers was competitive. And it was unusual in that there were no birdies or chip-ins.

Linda Garves in A flight and Liz Grafos in B both shot 51s. No-handicap golfer Drena Hozapple shot 57. Winners of C and D flights, Emma Long and Nancy Moore, weren’t far behind with 60 and 63 scores.

Net winners were Karen Goyins in A flight with 37, June Hathaway in B with 38, Beth Zehm in C with 39, and Candy Blackmer in D with 38.

Trailhead golfers in weekly outing

Ladies club from the Trailhead at Liberty Lake golf course conducted weekly business as usual.

Betty Grassl shot 47 in A flight to record the week’s low score. It included a chip-in on the second hole.

There was a three-way tie in B flight where Dee Lorenz, Iness Walth and Joy Russell each shot 58.

C flight went to Sandi Hatcher with a 60, and Bobbie Parent was no-handicap winner.

Net winners during the outing were Deanna Hauser with 34 in A flight, Bev Johnson with 33 in B, and Patty Haskins with 37 in C.
