Oregon State’s Buck stops Cougars for sixth save
Dallas Buck earned his sixth save of the season Saturday while completing Oregon State’s 3-2 win over Washington State in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game suspended by rain Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Jake Postlewait (10-3) earned the win and Tony Calderon hit his fourth home run for OSU (29-19, 8-11).
Buck allowed a one-out single to Zach McAngus before inducing ground-ball outs from Zach Franklin and pinch-hitter Zach Kosturos.
Grant Richardson cracked his 12th homer of the season for the Cougars (26-24, 6-13).
Saturday’s scheduled game was rained out. The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader today.
•Bryan Winston collected four hits and Ryne Webb had an RBI single in the 11th as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Big Bend CC 1-0 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East Division playoffs at Pasco.
The Sasquatch (24-20) qualified for the conference championships with the win. CCS will meet Edmonds (36-7) Thursday afternoon at Tri-Cities Stadium in Pasco.
CCS finished the day with a 1-0 loss to host Columbia Basin (41-5) in the title game. Winner Elliot Cribby pitched a three-hitter and struck out five.
•Tim Lincecum (9-2) pitched eight scoreless innings and 13th-ranked Washington (34-17-1, 15-8) retained its hold on first place in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 7-2 win over UCLA (30-26, 11-9) at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
The Huskies are one-half game ahead of No. 1-ranked Stanford. Twelve-year coach Ken Knutson (423-270-2) became the school’s all-time leader in baseball wins.
•Gonzaga canceled its West Coast Conference season-ending series with Loyola Marymount because of persistent rain in Spokane.
GU finished the season 24-27 and will graduate nine seniors. LMU (32-20-1) flew home to Los Angeles to prepare for the WCC Championships against Pepperdine.
Wrestling
Sandpoint’s Jared Lawrence has advanced to the championship match of his weight class at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Today, he will face national champion Jamill Kelly for the Olympic berth.
Men’s basketball
North Idaho College sophomore guard Paul Hafford has signed to play for Portland State University, NIC coach Hugh Watson said.
Hafford, who played his freshman season at Whitworth College, was NIC’s second-leading scorer (13.7 points) last season. He led the team with 84 3-pointers. He shot 44.8 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free-throw line.
Hafford scored a season-high 32 points in a Region 18 Tournament loss to College of Southern Idaho that ended NIC’s season.
Women’s golf
Washington recorded its best finish at the NCAA Championships by tying for sixth place as the four-round event wrapped up at the Lake Course at Grand National in Opelika, Ala.
The Huskies shot their best round of the tourney, a 4-under-par 284, to finish at 32-over 1,184 with Texas.
Sophomore Paige Mackenzie led the Huskies by placing 11th at even-par 288, including a final-round 68.
California’s Sarah Huarte won the individual title with a 10-under 278, one shot better than Karin Sjodin of Oklahoma State. UCLA (1,148) edged Oklahoma State by three strokes for the team title.
Arizona’s Lani Elston (Ferris High) tied for 93rd at 308.
Men’s golf
Washington claimed the final berth to nationals by placing 10th at the NCAA West Regional Championships at Crosswater at Sun River in Bend, Ore.
The Huskies finished at 21-over 885 to hold off 11th-place UNLV by four shots. Nationals begin June 1 at Hot Springs, Va.
Brock Mackenzie led UW by tying for 13th at 1-over 217. Also for UW, Dan Potter (Gonzaga Prep) shot 222, Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot 226, and his brother, Corey, carded a 228.
UCLA’s Travis Johnson and Arizona’s Chris Nallen tied for first at 5-under 211. UCLA (865) edged New Mexico by one shot for the team title.
Softball
Stefani Hertz struck out eight and Hannah Shelley hit a two-run homer in the first as CC Spokane defeated Edmonds 6-2 to finish 3-0 during the second day of the NWAACC Championships at Portland’s Delta Park.
The Sasquatch (32-12) will play Clackamas this morning and will finish no less than fourth place.
Vanessa Shelton went 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and three runs in the win over Edmonds. Shelton also hit a two-run homer in a day-opening, 17-9 win over Columbia Basin. She stole seven bases on the day to set school records for one season (33) and a career (49).
•Ashley Boek pitched a three-hitter to lead top-seeded Washington (39-17) to a 2-0 win over Georgia Tech (47-18) in an NCAA Regional semifinal at Athens, Ga.
