Trolia pitches Cougars to win over Golden Bears

Aaron Trolia pitched into the eighth inning and Garrett Alwert earned his second save of the season as the Washington State Cougars handed the California Bears a 7-3 defeat in Pacific-10 Conference baseball action at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Trolia (6-5) allowed all three runs and struck out four for the Cougars (28-25, 8-14).

The victory assures WSU of a winning record.

Adam Gold (6-7) went just three innings for the Bears (24-30, 8-14).

• Lower Columbia eliminated the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch from the NWAACC tournament with a 3-1 victory in Pasco.

Sasquatch starter Nigel Goodwin allowed three runs, all unearned, and took a no-hitter into the sixth.

Rowing

Washington State’s second varsity 8 finished third in its heat during the first day of the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Washington won the heat with a time of 6 minutes, 46.16 seconds, followed by Cal (6:48.14) and WSU (6:50.78). With the victory, the Huskies advanced to Sunday’s Grand Final. The Cougars and nine other boats will compete in one of two repechage races this morning. The top two boats in each race advance to the Grand Final.

The WSU varsity 4 was fifth in its heat and races in a repechage today.

The Cougars’ varsity 8 failed in two attempts to reach the semifinals.

Washington’s junior varsity 8 won its race to advance to the Grand Final. The Huskies’ varsity 8 advanced to the semifinals and needs a third-place finish or better to earn a berth in the Grand Final.

Ehlo to team with Calabro

Fox Sports Net announced today it has selected former NBA and Washington State player Craig Ehlo as the new color analyst for Seattle Sonics telecasts. He will join broadcasting veteran Kevin Calabro to form the announce team when FSN begins its Sonics telecasts next season.

FSN will televise a minimum of 70 games each year beginning in 2004-05.

Ehlo will also have an active role in FSN’s pregame and postgame, halftime, and weekly magazine shows and as the NBA studio analyst for the Northwest Sports Report.

He began his broadcast career in 2002, working as the color analyst for Gonzaga men’s basketball games for KHQ in Spokane as well as a number of Pac-10 games for Fox Sports Net Northwest.

He continued in both roles during the 2003-04 season, increasing his presence on FSN as the lead analyst for Pac-10 contests while also covering games for College Sports
