Donald Nelson

Spokane Valley

Memorial service for Donald Nelson, 87, will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Nelson, who died May 26, was born in Subway, a stop on the Electric Railroad just east of Millwood.

He grew up in Spokane Valley and graduated from West Valley High School. He attended Washington State College before enlisting in the Army in 1940.

Mr. Nelson landed with the first Allied Troops in Casablanca to begin the assault in the European Theater. He was also in amphibious landings in Sicily, twice in Italy and southern France. He served in the Third Division as a medic.

He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. He later was awarded a Battlefield Commission. He served under George Patton and with Audie Murphy.

After the war Mr. Nelson worked in the title insurance industry in Southern California. After his retirement he moved to Mias, Spain, and in 1982 returned to the Spokane Valley.

Survivors include three nephews, Jim Aucutt, Gary and Bill Nelson; and a niece, Nancy Mullenix.

Ryan (Lott) Powell

Post Falls

Viewing for Ryan Michael (Lott) Powell, 15, will be today from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and service will be at 11 a.m. at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Ryan died Wednesday from injuries suffered in an off-road motorcycle accident in Post Falls.

He was born in Placerville, Calif., and moved to Post Falls in 1989.

He attended Post Falls High School, where he was an outstanding wrestler and had received many awards and recognitions.

He enjoyed motorcycles, horses and taking care of his livestock.

Survivors include his parents, Phil and Cheryl Lott, and two sisters, Crystal and Melissa; and grandparents, Milton and Judy Lott of Austin, Nev., and Rose Sturgis of Post Falls.

Memorials may be made to the Ryan Powell Memorial Fund, at Bank of America in Post Falls.

Christopher Sweeney

Spokane

Memorial service for Christopher M. Sweeney, 40, will be today at 11 a.m. at Fourth Memorial Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sweeney, who died May 25, was born in Media, Pa., and moved to Washington with his family.

He attended All Saints Middle School and in 1982 graduated from Ferris High School. He also attended Spokane Community College.

He worked for Costco in Spokane for 17 years.

Mr. Sweeney was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed nature, camping and outdoor sports.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Tina; three sons, Joshua of Ellensburg, and Benjamin and Nicholas, both at home; his parents, Michael and Nancy Sweeney, three brothers Greg, Shawn, and Brian, all of Spokane; and a sister, Tamara of Bellevue, Wash.
