Lake City High volleyball coach Kent Scanlon, who hinted all season that his 31st overall season would likely be his last, submitted his resignation Tuesday.

Scanlon coached all 11 years that LC has been open and coached nine years previously at Coeur d’Alene, where his 1987 team captured a state championship. He also coached 11 years in Cerritos, Calif., before moving to CdA.

His 2003 LC team took third at state and the Timberwolves earned fourth this fall finishing 22-4 overall, the best record in school history. Scanlon’s career record concludes one victory shy of 500 at 499-250. His LC teams were 151-137.

“When I first started (coaching) I had no idea it would last this long,” Scanlon said. “There were a lot of positives that kept me going over the years. I had an incredible amount of good kids and good players, too. I say it that way for emphasis. I was very fortunate that I could be around some of the better kids. That’s what keeps you young.”

LC athletic director Jim Winger said Scanlon will be sorely missed.

“He’s a quality teacher on the court and in the classroom,” Winger said. “He’s a winner. He embodies everything you’d want your coaches to be.”
