2 Running rotation: The Sun Devils have gone through more running backs this season than the Mariners went through relief pitchers. Last week, it was 5-foot-11, 175-pound Rudy Burgess stepping into the spotlight, the fifth change at the position in seven weeks. And he took advantage, going for 34 carries and 186 yards. But even that career day may not keep him on the field full-time today against the Cougars. Junior Hakim Hill has been back practicing this week after seeing limited action the week before because of a sprained ankle. So why would Koetter put Hill back in the lineup for Burgess?
Burgess, a redshirt freshman who had once committed to WSU before Mike Price left for Alabama, is also the Sun Devils’ primary return man. Should Koetter want the talented tailback to focus in on his duties there, he could turn to the bigger (6-0, 219) and more powerful Hill to take over again in the backfield. That would significantly change the look of the Arizona State ground game, and could also spark a bigger play on special teams if Burgess is well-rested.
