Stubblefield sets NCAA catch mark

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Purdue wide receiver Taylor Stubblefield, a graduate of Davis High School in Yakima, broke the NCAA record for career receptions, catching his 301st pass during the first quarter Saturday against Indiana in West Lafayette, Ind.

Stubblefield entered the game needing six receptions to pass Louisville’s Arnold Jackson for the career record. Jackson caught 300 passes from 1997-00.

Stubblefield caught 14 passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns in a 63-24 rout of Indiana, giving him a total of 309 receptions.

Marshall’s Josh Davis also entered Saturday’s game against Western Michigan with 295 catches, the same total Stubblefield had going into the regular-season finale. Davis finished with six catches on the day.

Stubblefield also broke the school record for touchdown receptions. He has 15 this season. Vinny Sutherland and John Standeford had shared the record with 13.

Oklahoma’s Peterson ties mark

Oklahoma tailback Adrian Peterson tied the NCAA record for most 100-yard rushing games by a freshman with his 10th in the No. 2 Sooners’ 35-0 win over Baylor in Waco, Texas.

Peterson ran for 240 yards on 32 carries, with three short touchdowns after halftime. He has 1,671 yards this season for the Sooners.

Wisconsin’s Anthony Davis rushed for more than 100 yards 10 times as a freshman in 2001.

Gamecocks, Tigers duke it out

Players from South Carolina and Clemson brawled late in the game in Clemson, S.C., with 67-year-old coach Lou Holtz diving into the pile as peacemaker in his regular-season finale with the Gamecocks.

Police, security and coaches tried to separate the teams, who scuffled before the game started and continually pushed and shoved each other throughout.

The fight appeared to start at the line of scrimmage when South Carolina failed on a fourth-and-11. S.C. offensive lineman Chris White was fighting with Clemson players and others rushed to the center of the field to take part.

The mass of players moved to the east end zone before security, state troopers and other law enforcement officers could break things up.

Florida State honors Bowden

Florida State honored major college’s winningest coach by naming its playing surface “Bobby Bowden Field” at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, moments before the game against archrival Florida.

Bowden has 350 career victories.

“It’s an honor I never thought would occur,” Bowden said. “They chose to do it and I really appreciate it.”

Carroll College wins playoff opener

Regan Mack intercepted two passes and the Carroll College defense shut down Mary’s offense as the Saints beat the Marauders 24-14 on Saturday in Bismarck, N.D., in the first round of the NAIA playoffs.

No. 9 Carroll (9-2), the two-time defending national champion, took advantage of two Marauders turnovers in the second quarter to score three times and build a 17-7 halftime lead.
