Kansas exacts a little revenge on Nevada
That familiar motivator revenge was a big help in No. 2 Kansas’ 85-52 rout of Nevada on Monday night in Lawrence, Kan.
Coach Bill Self made sure everyone remembered how unranked Nevada upset then-No. 6 Kansas 75-61 last year.
“Coach brought the old clips when they smacked us pretty good and the fans stormed the court,” said Wayne Simien, who had 10 rebounds and 14 points for his third double-double in as many games. “He did it to motivate us. I think it did that.”
Taller, quicker and deeper, the Jayhawks (3-0) led from the start in dealing the Wolf Pack (3-1) their most lopsided loss since a 119-81 defeat to North Texas in February 1999.
“I thought our defense was pretty good,” Self said. “I thought the whole team played sluggish in the second half, which is to be expected. We still have to learn to put our foot on the throat.”
Nick Fazekas, the Wolf Pack’s leading scorer averaging 23.3 points a game, was harried by Christian Moody into 1-for-9 shooting in the first half and finished with 17 points.
(6) Oklahoma St. 76, SMU 57: John Lucas scored 11 of his 24 points during a 17-4 run in the first half, helping the Cowboys take control and knock off the Mustangs in Dallas.
Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton won for the 759th time, tying Ed Diddle for eighth place on the Division I career list. Next up is Sutton’s mentor, Henry Iba, with 767 wins.
(16) North Carolina St. 60, Purdue 53: Julius Hodge had 22 points to offset some horrible shooting by his teammates as the Wolfpack (5-0) held on to beat the Boilermakers (1-3) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, N.C.
(18) Texas 86, Coppin St. 50: Freshman Daniel Gibson scored 17 points as the Longhorns (4-1) used a barrage of 3-pointers to beat the Eagles (0-3) in Austin, Texas.
