Area students at UI receive math, computer science awards

Area University of Idaho students majoring in math or computer science recently received renewable scholarships from the Computer Science, Engineering and Math Scholars Program. Recipients were selected from returning majors in computer science and math on the basis of high school academic achievement and financial need. The scholarships are renewable for up to three years if students maintain the requirements. The students will meet annually and be advised throughout the year of internships, research and graduate school opportunities.

The students are listed by their hometowns.

Bonners Ferry: Cody Greenhalgh.

Coeur d’Alene: Michelle Kalman and Dennis Noordam.

Laclede: Tyrel Johnson.

Moscow: John Brunsfeld, Joshua Burns, Wade Copeland, Janessa Peterson and Wor Thongthai. Nordman: Fauna Samuel.

Post Falls: Emily Denn. Rathdrum: Christen Simpson.

Elizabeth Graves, a junior at Eastern Washington University, has received a $2,500 Transfer Academic Honors Scholarship for the current academic year.

The award is given to outstanding students entering EWU with a completed associate of arts degree and a minimum 3.7 grade-point average.

Graves was a home-school student and is the daughter of Kathy and Peter Graves of Post Falls.

Jake Freeman, a 2000 graduate of Lake City High School, received a degree in civil and environmental engineering and graduated cum laude this spring from University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Freeman recently became an engineer in training after passing the fundamentals of engineering national exam and is currently serving a three-month civil engineering internship in Ireland for the Sligo County Council transportation department.

He is the son of Tom and Patti Freeman of Post Falls.

• Air Force Airman Vincent R. Anabel, a 2002 graduate of Lake City High School, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Anabel received six weeks of training and also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Jean and John Koudelka of Coeur d’Alene.

• The North Idaho College cheerleaders earned top awards during a recent three-day Universal Cheerleaders Association summer camp held at Eastern Washington University.

The 18-member squad earned both the Most Collegiate Mascot Award, and the Leadership Award, which is given to the squad that other camp participants would most like to be a member of aside from their own.

The camp included colleges and universities from throughout the Northwest and as the largest squad at the event, NIC competed in the large co-ed division. Three members of the NIC squad currently serve as UCA instructors at various regional summer camps and after the competition, another six members were given applications and invited to tryout to become UCA instructors.

Sonja Brekke, Josiah Hubbard, David Tyler Rush and Cody Troseth, all of Wasilla, Alaska; Ray Christie, Hayden; Matthew Davies, Brianne Montee, Laura Palmer, Brian Peterson and Jessica Poole, all of Coeur d’Alene; Adam Durflinger, Andy Hodl and Gavin Krieg, all of Post Falls; Patricia Enzler, Chattaroy; Kim Hutton, Nampa, Idaho; Nicole Stocking, Rathdrum; Stacy Taylor, Spokane; and Samantha Womack, Kennewick. Kristi Lacroix serves as coach and Justin Morrison is the assistant coach.

• North Idaho College student, Kyle Pringle of Oldtown, Idaho, has been awarded a $1,000 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Scholarship based on a demonstration of academic excellence and participation in community service projects.

Pringle is enrolled in NIC’s machine technology program and plans to complete the program in the spring.

He currently operates his own commercial sewing company, Last Stitch Effort.
