‘Team America’ opens tonight

Now, America can see puppets making sweet love one week sooner.

The irreverent comedy “Team America: World Police,” from “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, sneaks its marionette feet into 800 theaters for previews tonight (including Spokane’s NorthTown and River Park Square cinemas).

Boasting puppet cameos from the likes of Michael Moore, Barbra Streisand, George Clooney, Sean Penn and Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, “Team America” is rife with political incorrectness, extreme violence and explicit puppet-on-puppet action.

The Motion Picture Association of America initially slapped the film with a restrictive NC-17 rating, but changed that to an R this week after viewing a revised version.

“It’s something we all did as kids with Barbie and Ken dolls,” Parker told the Los Angeles Times. “The whole joke of it is that it’s just two dolls flopping around on each other. You see the hinges on their legs.”
