Goldie (Carlson) Anderson

Spokane

Visitation for Goldie Jeanette (Carlson) Anderson, 90, will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Spokane.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Tower, Minn., died Oct. 6.

Her childhood was spent in the Tower and Ely communities of Minnesota. After graduating from Tower-Soudan High School, she attended business school and afterward worked in Duluth.

She married John Anderson in1940. In 1948 they moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and taught private piano lessons. When she was 10, her father bought her a piano, and in her later years she was still playing the piano for events at Lilac Plaza Retirement Community, where she lived for 18 years. At 88, she passed down her Everett upright to a great-granddaughter.

She was a member of the Greater Spokane Music and Allied Arts organization. She completed music and teaching courses and studied with Margaret Ott.

Mrs. Anderson and her husband were lifetime members at St. Peter Lutheran Church, where they both taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed quilting and pieced numerous quilts at her church and sewed for her children and grandchildren.

She also enjoyed reading the Bible, walking, playing Scrabble and attending concerts at public parks in Spokane.

Her husband died in 1995.

Survivors include four children, Bob Anderson of Spokane, Sheryl Koury of Houston, Lois Garrett of Metaline Falls, Wash., and Larry Anderson of Ephrata, Wash.; three siblings, Ruth Jacobson of Minneapolis, Gladys Krauss of Spokane and Eddie Carlson of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Verona Connors

Spokane

Visitation for Verona Mae Connors, 86, will be today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Connors, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

She graduated from North Central High School.

In addtition to being a homemaker, she was an artist and had worked with former Gov. Booth Gardner’s salary commission.

Her husband of 64 years, Wilson, died in June.

Survivors include a son, Tim Connors, and a sister, Betty Newton, both of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Michael Mullins

Spokane

Visitation for Michael P. Mullins, 41, will be Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home, with funeral at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Mullins, who was born in Panorama City, Calif., died Thursday.

A resident of Spokane most of his life, he attended North Central High School. He worked as a meatcutter and then as a construction laborer.

Mr. Mullins was also a Harley-Davidson enthusiast.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Sharon Mullins of Spokane; four siblings, William and David Mullins, both of Spokane, Melinda Mullins of Seattle and Kathleen Ragudo of Spokane; and his grandmother, Kathryn Keith of California.

Sister Rosemary Druffel SNJM

Spokane

Funeral Mass for Sister Rosemary (Adeline Mary) Druffel, 91, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Convent of the Holy Names. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Rosemary, who died Sunday, was born in Colton, Wash. She attended Holy Guardian Angel grade school in Colton and graduated from St. Scholastica’s Academy in Colton as valedictorian of her class.

In the fall of 1931 she enrolled at Holy Names Normal School in Spokane, receiving her diploma in 1934. She returned to the Colton area to teach in a small country school for two years. In 1936 she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, pronouncing her vows in 1938.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Holy Names College and taught mostly junior high students from 1939 to 1961. Her assignments led her from Seattle to Spokane to Richland.

Sister Druffel was assigned to the German and education departments at Holy Names College. She held two master’s degrees, in education and in German, from the University of Washington. She was awarded a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany to study at the Goethe Institute in Munich in 1963. From 1965 to 1981, Sister Druffel was a member of the faculty at Fort Wright College of the Holy Names. She was a housemother during those years and took groups of students on trips to Germany as enrichment for their studies.

From 1982 to 1985, after the close of the college, she taught German in the Early Childhood Development Center. In 1986, Sister Druffel began teaching English to foreign students at Barton School.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Clara (Miller) Stroyan

Valley, Wash.

No service will be held for Clara Josephine (Miller) Stroyan, 97. Schanzenbach Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stroyan, who was born in Siding, Minn., died Oct. 5.

She attended Catholic schools in Mankato, Minn., until the end of seventh grade. Her family then moved to the Valley, Wash., area, and she completed the eighth grade in Valley and graduated from Valley High School in 1926.

After graduation she worked on the family farm for two years, then moved to Spokane, where she gained employment with the True Blue Bisquit Co.

She married Frank Stroyan in 1930 in Spokane, and they returned to Valley in 1938. For seven years they rented and operated the Associated Service Station in Valley. In 1945 they purchased the Signal Station across the highway from where they lived and eventually named it Stroyan’s Service Station. Her husband maintained the bulk gas and oil delivery service, and Mrs. Stroyan did much of the service station work, including servicing cars and bookkeeping.

After their retirement in 1976, they resided on their property south of the service station.

Her husband died in 1992.

She and her husband were involved in the community, and the Valley High School class of 1961 dedicated its yearbook to them. They were also honored as the grand marshals of the Valley Community Fair in 1984.

Survivors include three children, Jacqueline Franks, Elizabeth Deuber and William Stroyan; a sister, Marie Lamb; numerous grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jerry Johnson

Spokane

Military service for Jerry Lee Johnson, 63, will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51, 300 W. Mission Av e. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Stillwell, Okla., died Thursday. He was a resident of Spokane 20 years.

He graduated from Grandview (Wash.) High School in 1960, and joined the Marines soon after. He served as a military policeman during the Vietnam War from 1960 to about 1970 and was awarded the Rifle Marksman Badge and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married his first wife, Sheila, in 1964, and the couple later divorced.

In 1995 he married his second wife, Nancy Burns.

Mr. Johnson was employed by K&N Electric Co. for many years, retiring in 2002. In his spare time he and his wife, Nancy, started J&N Lawn Care. Other interests included gardening, tending to his roses, and John Wayne movies. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Johnson of Sunnyside, Wash., and Jerry Johnson Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Ashlie Burns-Johnson of Spokane; three sisters, Lois Hackworth of Four Lakes, Vicki Smith of Kennewick and Terry Hamill of Grandview, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Stephen Shea

Spokane

Rosary service for Stephen D. Shea, 62, will be today at 7 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, with inurnment at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Shea, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday. He was a lifelong resident of Spokane.

He attended St. Francis of Assisi Grade School, graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory High School in 1960, and received a Bachelor of Science from Gonzaga University. He earned teaching certification from Eastern Washington University and a master’s degree from Whitworth College.

Mr. Shea was an educator and coach at St. George’s High School and Glover Middle School. He was an avid runner, golfer, bicyclist, hiker and marathon finisher.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Patricia; a son, Timothy Shea, and a daughter, Heather LaLone, both of Spokane; two brothers, Patrick Shea of Spokane and Michael Shea of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Lawrence Doyl

Spokane

Memorial service for Lawrence R. “Larry” Doyl, 84, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Rockwood Manor lounge, 2903 E. 25th Ave. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Doyl, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Doyl was a mechanical and electrical engineer for various businesses, including Washington Water Power, Kaiser Research and Consulting Engineers in Spokane.

He attended Manito Presbyterian Church, Open Bible Church and Spokane Faith Center.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Marjorie; two sons, Russ and Ron Doyl, both of Spokane; three brothers, Vernon, Kenneth and Lloyd Doyl, all of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Evelyn (Luiten) Lenhart

Spokane Valley

Graveside service for Evelyn Ann (Luiten) Lenhart, 79, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Harrington (Wash.) Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Chapel, Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lenhart, a 50-year resident of the Spokane area, died Oct. 1.

She was born at the family home near Lamona, Wash.

She graduated from Odessa High School in 1943 and attended Washington State College for a year. In 1946 she married Harvey Lenhart and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Lenhart enjoyed golfing, games, painting, cooking, needlework and gardening.

Her husband died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Richard Lenhart of Spokane; two daughters, Janet Hutchinson of Spokane and Pam Smith of Colville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clara (Meyer) Schwisow

Ritzville, Wash.

Visitation for Clara (Meyer) Schwisow, 96, will be today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville. Funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville, with vault interment to follow at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Schwisow died Monday.

She was born in Sutton, Neb., and iIn 1933 she moved to Ritzville, where she lived with her aunt.

In 1934 she married farmer Harry Schwisow and was a homemaker.

She a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and active in its women’s organizations.

She and her husband moved from the farm into Ritzville in 1976.

Survivors include her husband; and a daughter, Barbara Ann Schwisow of Bozeman.

Retha Skinner

Sandpoint

Funeral for Retha P. Kinkade Skinner, 81, was Thursday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport.

Mrs. Skinner, who was born in Black Diamond, Wash., died Oct. 4.

She married Lynn Skinner in 1952 and lived near Oldtown, Idaho, nearly all her adult life.

In 1969 Mrs. Skinner donated a kidney to her sister, Dorothy.

She enjoyed cooking and gardening and was a member of the Newport Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Skinner moved into Valley Vista Care in Sandpoint because of poor health. Her husband died earlier.

Survivors include a son, Mike Collins of Priest River; four daughters, Susan, Lynda Skinner Turner of Ona, W.Va., Jeannie Skinner Hutchins of Diamond Lake, Wash., and Ella Skinner of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
