Cougars fall in five to ASU

Jennifer Todd and Kelly Rosin each had 20 kills, but it wasn’t enough to save Washington State (3-17, 0-7 Pac-10) from falling 30-19, 30-25, 21-30, 28-30, 15-13 to visiting Arizona State, its seventh straight league loss, in volleyball action Saturday.

•It took five games, but Idaho (13-5, 6-3 Big West) won its fifth consecutive match with a 30-22, 30-23, 24-30, 28-30, 15-12 win over Cal State Fullerton at Fullerton, Calif.

•Loyola Marymount routed Gonzaga (4-16, 0-6 WCC) 30-12, 30-14, 30-24 in Los Angeles.

Emilee Gihring had 28 assists for the Bulldogs.

• Eastern Washington coasted to a 30-28, 30-27, 30-19 at home against Montana. Lizzy Mellor had 16 kills and 11 digs for the Eagles (12-6, 6-1 Big Sky).

•Julie Marsh had 14 kills and 14 digs, and Katy Schrader had 13 kills and seven block assists as Whitworth (15-3, 8-2 NWC) rolled over visiting Linfield 30-17, 30-23, 31-29.

•No. 1 Washington (15-0, 7-0 Pac-10) stayed unbeaten, winning 30-28, 30-22, 26-30 30-24 over Arizona at Tuscon, Ariz.

Women’s soccer

Jen Hamann scored the game’s only goal in the 36th minute as Eastern (4-7-2 Big Sky) notched a 1-0 home win over Idaho State.

•Mary Hultgrenn scored her ninth goal of the year, but Whitworth (9-0-1 NWC) could only tie Pacific (Ore.) 1-1 at Forest Grove, Ore.

Men’s soccer

Kenshiro Uki scored on a breakaway in double overtime to give Whitworth (7-0-1 NWC) a 2-1 win on the road at Pacific (Ore.).

Cross country

WSU’s women finished 28th at the NCAA Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

On the men’s side, Danny Wolf placed 19th to lead the Cougars to a 20th-place finish.

•At the EWU Invitational, Gonzaga’s women tied with EWU for fourth place. Jill Semenza of GU was the top local finisher, coming in third.

On the men’s side, EWU finished second, with Gonzaga third and Idaho fifth.

•Whitworth took both men’s and women’s races at the Runners Soul Bigfoot Open at Spokane Falls CC. Mark Currell of CCS won the men’s race, finishing the 8k race in 25:21.

Anastasia Kostina of Washington State sits in first place by one stroke after two days at the Stanford Women’s Intercollegiate.
