Three commit to Idaho hoops

The Spokesman-Review

The University of Idaho men’s basketball recruiting class is taking shape with three commitments.

The latest verbal commitments are from Hill College forward Igor Vrzina and Wisconsin prep swingman David DuBois. Troy (Idaho) High’s Aaron Smith verbally committed to the Vandals in July. The next signing period begins Nov. 10.

Vrzina, 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, averaged 11 points and seven rebounds for Hill College, located in Hillsboro, Texas. The Serbian native was recruited by Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW), Utah State, Southern Mississippi, UT-San Antonio, Oral Roberts and New Mexico State, Hills coach Swede Trenkle said.

“He’s a four-man that can shoot the 3 really well,” said Trenkle, a former Vandal and son of ex-College of Southern Idaho coach Fred Trenkle. “He plays well with his back to the basket and he uses both hands inside. He’s just a smart basketball player.”

One of Vrzina’s teammates is freshman guard Tre Perry, son of Idaho coach Leonard Perry.

DuBois, 6-5 and 215 pounds, can play shooting guard or small forward. He’ll probably play the latter position at Idaho. He is entering his senior year at Madison La Follette High. He averaged 18.2 points and 5.5 rebounds last season.

DuBois was recruited by Central Michigan, William & Mary and Coastal Carolina, according to Seneca Blue, who coaches DuBois’ AAU team.

Smith, a 6-7 forward, was Most Valuable Player of the Whitepine League as a junior as Troy finished third at the State 1A tournament.

Volleyball

Collese Dornan totaled 12 kills and Chanelle Larsen added eight blocks while leading North Idaho College (22-14) to a 30-21, 30-15, 30-28 non-conference sweep of host Big Bend CC at Moses Lake.

Tiana Maua added 28 assists and Kelsey Kinzer 23 digs for the Cardinals. NIC also swept BBCC on Oct. 6.

•Eastern Washington University junior Lizzy Mellor was selected Big Sky Conference co-player of the week after totaling 27 kills, 17 digs and a hitting percentage of .308 against Montana and Montana State last weekend.

Women’s golf

The Lady Aztec Fall Invitational at Chula Vista, Calif., was postponed after two rounds because of rain, leaving Idaho in 11th place among 15 teams.

Idaho’s Cassie Castleman tied for 21st place with a 7-over 151. Baylor won the team title with a 590, 30 strokes better than Idaho.

Men’s golf

Washington State placed fourth among 18 teams at the rain-shortened Wolf Pack Classic at Reno, Nev.

The Cougars finished two rounds at Wolf Run Golf Club at even-par 576, 12 shots behind champion Lamar.

Jordan Madison, who tied for fourth at 4-under 140, and David Fern (Mead High), who tied for 10th at 142, led the Cougars. Denver’s Charlie Soule, Lamar’s Dawie VanDerWalt and Oregon State’s Ryan Gilmour were co-champions at 139.

Women’s soccer

Washington State University junior goalkeeper Katie Hultin was named Pacific-10 Conference player of the week after recording shutouts against eighth-ranked UCLA and No. 22 Southern California over the weekend.

Hultin, who has six shutouts for the season, became the first Cougars player to win the award twice in one season.
