Margaret (Briggs) Carlson

Spokane

Memorial service for Margaret Lorene (Briggs) Carlson, 80, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Spokane Valley Baptist Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Carlson, who was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, died Sunday.

She was valedictorian of the Pocatello (Idaho) High School graduating class of 1942 and narrowly lost the state legionnaires’ oratorical contest.

She attended Idaho State University from 1942 to 1944, then transferred to the University of Redlands, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945.

In 1945 she married David Carlson. He died in 1961.

Mrs. Carlson taught in the Idaho Falls School District, and when the family moved to Spokane Valley, began teaching at Opportunity and Adams elementary schools. She also taught at Bowdish Junior High.

In 1966 she received a Master of Arts in elementary education from Eastern Washington University.

She enjoyed writing poetry and singing and was a longtime member of the choir at the Spokane Valley Baptist Church, which she attended for the 45 years she resided in Spokane Valley.

Mrs. Carlson won a Fulbright Scholarship as an exchange teacher and taught a year in Nailsea, England, outside of Bristol. She later secured a position teaching through the American Baptist Convention at Shokei Womens University in Sendai, Japan, where she taught for two years and also provided lessons in English for Japanese officers at a nearby Japanese Self Defense Forces base.

Survivors include three children, David and Linnea Carlson, both of Spokane, and Corlan Carlson of Freeland, Wash.; four brothers Fergus Jr. of Pocatello, Rolla of Garden Valley, Idaho, Jack of North Fork, Idaho, and Robert of San Francisco; a sister, Mona of Portland; seven grandchildren and one great-grand child.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Valley Baptist Church or to the local chapter of the National Alzheimer’s Association.

Gary Oursland

Post Falls

Memorial service for Gary A. Oursland, 48, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Post Falls Baptist Church. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Oursland, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Monday.

He was a lifelong resident of Kootenai County and was a member of Post Falls Baptist Church.

Mr. Oursland attended school at TESH and also was employed through the agency.

Survivors include two sisters, Patricia Nutting of Coeur d’Alene and Mary Steele of Post Falls; and a brother, Daniel Oursland of Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Edmund Kuest

Odessa, Wash.

Funeral for Edmund E. Kuest, 102, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa. Burial will be at Odessa Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kuest, who died Sunday, was born in Odessa.

He grew up in Odessa and in 1935 married Lorena Hille.

Mr. Kuest was a warehouse foreman at several different fruit-packing warehouses in Wenatchee. He lived in Wenatchee for 40 years before moving back to Odessa.

Survivors include his wife; and a brother, Harvey Kuest of Soap Lake, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.

Wilda (Hazeltine) Hunter

Roseville, Calif.

Service for Wilda Mary (Hazeltine) Hunter, 91, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow with burial to follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Mrs. Hunter, who was born in Viola, Idaho, died Aug. 21.

She lived and worked in Moscow while attending high school. She graduated in 1931.

She married Robert Hunter that year and they moved to Sandpoint in 1947.

The couple owned Hunter’s Paint Store in Sandpoint from 1947 until 1967.

She later returned to Moscow and worked as a secretary for the University of Idaho.

Her family owned a cabin at Bottle Bay on Lake Pend Oreille for more than 40 years.

She later moved to Roseville to be near family.

Mrs. Hunter was a member of the Moscow Presbyterian Church, Toastmasters and the Eagles Auxiliary.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing, swimming and bowling.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Cameron of Roseville.; two sisters, Verla Hall of Sandpoint and Thelma Pelfrey of Spokane; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Seppo Parviainen

Elk, Wash.

Memorial service for H. Seppo Parviainen, 54, will be Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the home of Terry and Liisa Smith, E. 3927 18th Ave., Spokane. Spokane Cremation and Burial is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Parviainen, who was born in Lappee, Finland, died Monday. He was a resident of the Spokane area for 35 years.

He graduated from Ferris High School in 1968 and attended Eastern Washington University.

Mr. Parviainen was drafted into the Army in 1969 and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., and in Virginia. He was honorably discharged in 1971 as a specialist 4th class.

He worked as a paver for Finn Asphalt Services Inc., where he operated an asphalt roller. He also was a painter.

His hobbies included golf, running and sports.

He is survived by father, Pentti Parviainen of Vancouver, B.C.; a sister, Liisa Smith of Spokane; and two brothers, Pete Parviainen of Elk and Mike Parviainen of Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Clifford Robertson

Davenport, Wash.

Memorial service for Clifford E. Robertson, 81, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Strate Funeral Home, Davenport.

Mr. Robertson, who died Aug. 17, was born in Barons, Alberta.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Robertson was an accountant for Square D Transformer Co. in Spokane.

He was a member of the Forester Union and a charter member of the Northgate Baptist Church. He played lead guitar and sang backup vocals for Vaughon Monroe.

His wife, Irene, died in 2003.

Survivors include four daughters, Sylvia Coyne of Garibaldi, Ore., Kitty Scharff of Mondovi, Wash., Shirley Christofferson of Sand Coulee, Mont., and Charlein Storm of Mead; two sisters, Vivian Casey of Davenport and Dorothy Keizel of Ketchikan, Alaska; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Nursing Home, Harrington, Wash., Davenport emergency medical technicians or Spokanimal Care.

Valery Roth

Spokane

Memorial Mass for Valery T. Roth, 76, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at Exira Cemetery in Iowa. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roth, who was born in Billings, died Aug. 7.

He attended school in Billings, and after high school he enlisted in the Army, serving from 1944 to 1946.

Mr. Roth worked many years at General Machinery as a machinist, retiring in 1989.

He married Elma Jacobsen Jenkins in 1980.

He enjoyed square dancing, and was a longtime supporter of the Western Dance Association and the area council.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include a brother, Urban Roth of Flathead Lake, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Dance Association or Cancer Patient Care of Spokane County.

Joseph Genova

Spokane

Visitation for Joseph Genova, 89, will be today at 6 p.m. with a vigil service to follow at 7 p.m. at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for Friday at 10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Opportunity, Mr. Genova, died Monday.

He grew up in Opportunity on the family homestead, which is the present site of his restaurant, Ron’s Drive-In. He established the restaurant in 1958. It was the first drive-in restaurant in the Spokane Valley. He retired at the age of 80. Prior to his drive-in days, he owned a fruit stand for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Laura; four children, Susie White and Laura Lee, both of Seattle, Ron Genova of Spokane Valley and Jim Genova of Kirkland, Wash.; a brother, Art; a sister, Helen; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or to Morning Star Boys’ Ranch.

Elizabeth ‘Betty Honn

Spokane

Memorial service for Elizabeth “Betty” M. Honn, 80, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Opportunity Presbyterian Church in Spokane Valley. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Honn, who was born in Williston, N.D., died Tuesday.

She grew up in Poulson, Mont., and graduated from Great Falls High School. She attended teachers college in Great Falls.

Mrs. Honn was a homemaker. She was a volunteer with the Parent-Teacher Association and the Central Valley Band.

A 47-year member of Opportunity Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder and was involved in the Deacon Women’s Association and youth group.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald; two sons, Patrick and Dan Honn; two daughters, Carol Herzog and Helen Honn; and eight grandchildren.

Bruce Reichel

Spokane

Memorial service for Bruce Gale Reichel was held in Othello, Wash.

Mr. Reichel, who was born in Camp LeJeune, Jacksonville, N.C., died last Thursday. He was 50.

He spent most of his life in Colville, and the past seven years in Spokane to be near his mother.

Survivors include his mother, Susie Williamson of Spokane; three brothers, Jimmie Reichel of Lytle, Texas, Bill Cox of Raymond, Wash., and Tony Olmos of Soap Lake, Wash.; and three sisters, Beth Cruz and Pauline Silva, both of Othello, and Pauline Ferreira of Colville.

James Rudolph

Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for James A. “Jim” Rudolph, 79, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Bible Church. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rudolph, who was born in Latham, Kan., died Aug. 25.

He grew up in Latham and Winfield, Kan., and served in the Navy during World War II. He earned various recognitions during his military service, including a Purple Heart.

In 1946 he married Marilyn Finney. They lived in Kansas City, Kan.

He worked for Kansas City Southwestern Bell for 37 years and retired in 1983. They moved to Silverton in 1987.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Connie Fletcher of Hayden, Idaho, Cindy Somers of Pinetop, Ariz., and Deborah Castro of California; a sister, Phylis Hatrock of Kellogg; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Stanley Ault

Spokane

Graveside service for Stanley C. Ault, 85, will be today at 3 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park, with a memorial service at 4 p.m. at Westgate Christian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ault, who was born in Waitsburg, Wash., died Sunday.

A graduate Cheney High School, he served in the Army in the European Theater.

He retired from Kaiser Aluminum at Mead in 1979 and was a member of Steel Workers Union Local 329.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Doris Ault.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Thoorsell of Spokane; two sons, Steve Ault of Stanwood, Wash., and Dale Ault of Newport, Ore.; two sisters, Maxine Goldsmith of Spokane Valley and Doris Wiley of Prosser, Wash.; and a grandchild.

Edward Hester

Colburn, Idaho

Service for Edward Raymond Hester, 56, will be today at 10 a.m. at Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at McArthur Cemetery, north of Sandpoint.

Mr. Hester, who was born in Oceanside, Calif., died Sunday.

He grew up and attended school in Vista, Calif., and was stationed in Germany with the Army during the late 1960s.

He then returned to California and owned Pet Parlor, a pet-grooming business in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. He sold his business and in 2002 moved to Sandpoint.

He recently worked for Handyman Services in Sandpoint.

Mr. Hester was active in ministering and sharing the word of God. He enjoyed working with his hands, hiking and billiards.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah and Rachael Hester, both of Bakersfield, Calif.; and a brother, Vance Hester of San Antonio.

Larry Allen

Spokane

Memorial service for Larry Lanue Allen, 58, will be today at 1 p.m. at First Church of the Open Bible. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Allen, who was born in Charleston, S.C., died Sunday. He was a resident of Spokane for 37 years.

He served in the Air Force and was a real estate agent.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Charlotte; three daughters, Kimberley, Kelley and Alisha; a sister, Loreta Christopher; two brothers, Ronnie and David Allen; and nine grandchildren.
