Community events

Spokane First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., is hosting an old -fashioned community street fair.

Come rain or shine on Sept. 12 from 2 to 6 p.m., the afternoon of giving and fun will include puppies from SpokAnimal C.A.R.E., the real wiener-mobile with $1 hot dogs, cold drinks from McDonald’s, an antique fire truck, and a visit from the Washington State Patrol drug dog, Pickles.

Participants are asked to bring donations of men’s and women’s clothing for Goodwill, the City Gate Mission and Ogden Hall. Soldiers’ gift packages that include such items as cologne, deodorant, soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes, calculators, games and magazines will be taken for the USO-Family Division, and nonperishable food items will be accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

There also will be information booths to learn more about the Spokane Police Department Chaplain’s Office, Spokane Fire Department, Civil Air Patrol, Teen Aid, Spokane Humane Society, Vanessa Behan Clinic and Crosswalk. Spokane Police volunteers will also be there to fingerprint children and sign up new recruits. For more information, call the church office at 467-8986.

Hymn sing

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., is hosting its annual hymn sing on Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.

Some of Spokane’s premier musicians will perform a program of hymns as well as take requests from the hymnal for the acongregation to sing.

Organist Carol Miyamoto leads the ensemble, which includes singers Randi Von Ellefson and Ann Fennessy, brass players Dan Keberle, Melinda Keberle, Andy Plamondon and Tom Molter, and percussionist Marty Zyskowski. For information, call the church office at 747-6677.

Cathedral fair

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is hosting an outdoor fair Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. Join church members to enjoy an inflatable obstacle course, games, a jumping castle, face painting and more. There will also be hot dogs, sausages, chips and drinks for sale.
