Thursday’s N.L. games
Mets 4, Marlins 0: At Miami, Kris Benson took a shutout into the seventh inning, Eric Valent homered and New York ended three streaks by beating Florida. The Mets snapped an 11-game losing streak while stopping the Marlins’ franchise record-tying, nine-game winning streak. New York also ended a run of 10 consecutive losses to Florida.
Brewers 7, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Wes Helms hit a grand slam and Brady Clark had four hits against his former team, leading Milwaukee over the Reds.
Pirates 3-2, Astros 1-9: At Pittsburgh, Jeff Bagwell, Brad Ausmus and Lance Berkman drove in two runs each and Houston shook off Pirates starter Oliver Perez’s dominance in the opener, beating Pittsburgh for its 13th victory in 14 games and a doubleheader split. In the first game, Perez ended the Astros’ 12-game winning streak with the most dominating start of his short career, striking out 14 in a victory — the Astros’ only loss since Aug. 26.
Phillies 9, Braves 4: At Atlanta, Philadelphia overcame a blown lead, beating the Braves with Jim Thome’s two-run double and another stellar performance by the bullpen.
Rockies 9, Padres 7: At Denver, Todd Helton had three RBIs and Aaron Miles hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the seventh to send Colorado past San Diego. Jorge Piedra had three hits and scored four runs as a last-minute replacement for Jeromy Burnitz, who was scratched with two strained groins.
Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 3: At Los Angeles, Steve Finley homered twice, driving in the go-ahead run for the second consecutive game, and Jose Lima earned his first win in a month as the Dodgers defeated Arizona. Finley snapped a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a solo homer, then hit a two-run shot in the sixth to give the Dodgers a 5-2 lead. They held on to extend their West lead to five games over idle San Francisco. Arizona finished 3-16 against the Dodgers this year.
