New York pianist Hsia-Jung Chang, who grew up in Spokane, will return to play a recital of works by Frederic Chopin on Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church.

Chang, who was born in Taiwan, won the Young Artist Competition at the Greater Spokane Allied Arts and Music Festival in 1984. After graduating from Shadle Park High School, she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance at the University of Houston and a doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music.

She has recorded several Chopin works on the Mandala Studio label, including the newly released “Complete Preludes.”

Tuesday’s concert begins at 7 p.m. at the church, 318 S. Cedar St. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, at the door or in advance at Ho Ho Teriyaki in the Flour Mill.

One-third of the proceeds will benefit Barton School, an all-volunteer adult literacy program for immigrants which is sponsored by First Presbyterian. Chang’s mother, Ho Lan, is a former Barton School student who performed throughout the Northwest as a singer-guitarist before opening Ho Ho Teriyaki.
