More serious mistake was incorporation
In last week’s Valley Voice, Tom Cameron said the citizens of Spokane Valley made a serious mistake by voting down the tax increase proposed by the City Council.
In my opinion, a much more serious mistake was made when the citizens voted to incorporate, and things are playing out just as I expected.
The people who got elected said they were not running for the money, but 18 months later, guess what, they just decided they need a raise. Well, really, I guess they got a committee to tell them they deserved one, as there was much more work involved than they expected.
And all the extra services for less money? Guess what, the cost of having four governments for less money than three, hasn’t worked out so well. It seems the proponents for a city were off a little on their estimates of income. But not far, just millions.
Mr. Cameron thinks the tax issue should be back on the ballot. I don’t think so. I think the council should put the issue of unincorporating on a ballot with the issue of their raises. That, in my opinion is the only way we will ever keep from being another Spokane that Mr. Cameron seems to fear so much.
