Bi-County: Lind-Ritzville’s Nick Ashley went 4 for 4 with seven RBIs in hitting for the cycle in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Odessa. Ashley’s home run was his third of the year. L-R’s Jake Kragt added a homer, his first of the year. L-R (6-1, 2-0) also swept a doubleheader on Tuesday from La Salle of Yakima, 11-8 and 11-3. Travis Dewald picked up the win in the first game, running his record to 4-0 on the season.

Panorama: Martin St. John of Columbia-Hunters struck out five Republic batters in one inning on Saturday, with two passed balls allowing runners to reach base after being fanned. Despite the impressive feat, the Lions (3-4, 3-3) were swept by Republic (5-1, 4-0). The Tigers hit seven homers in the sweep. It wasn’t all bad news for Columbia, which picked up two wins on the day when Curlew forfeited a doubleheader, and the Lions played Republic instead. Northport opened league play with a sweep of St. Michael’s, outscoring the Warriors 29-6. Selkirk and St. George’s combined to score 66 runs in a doubleheader Saturday, but both games were decided by only one run. Selkirk won the first game 16-15, and St. George’s earned the split with an 18-17 win.

Whitman County: LaCrosse-Washtucna, Asotin and Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia all started off the league baseball season with doubleheader sweeps. Saturday brings a big doubleheader, when Asotin (4-0, 4-0) plays at T-O/R (2-2, 2-0). … L-W’s softball team moved to 5-0, 2-0 with a sweep of St. John-Endicott last Saturday. Jen Ayers-Stamper has all five wins for the Tigercats.
