Indians 4, Tigers 3: At Detroit, Aaron Boone hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Ugueth Urbina in the eighth inning, leading Cleveland over Detroit.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5: At Toronto, Bronson Arroyo won his first start of the season, and Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon homered to lead Boston over Toronto for its second straight win under interim manager Brad Mills.

Devil Rays 3, Athletics 2 (10): At St. Petersburg, Fla., Nick Green hit a broken-bat single in the 10th inning to give Tampa Bay a win over Oakland. Joey Gathright began the 10th with a leadoff triple against Juan Cruz (0-1) and Carl Crawford was intentionally walked before Green’s single on a 0-2 pitch.

Orioles 12, Yankees 5: At New York, Sidney Ponson put an off-season of trouble behind him and pitched effectively into the sixth inning, and Brian Roberts and Baltimore’s lineup awoke to beat New York.

White Sox 5, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, Orlando Hernandez pitched seven sparkling innings in his White Sox debut, and sixth-inning home runs by Paul Konerko and Aaron Rowand lifted Chicago past Minnesota in the Twins’ home opener.

Royals 6, Angels 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Denny Bautista allowed three hits over eight innings for his first major league victory, leading Kansas City over Los Angeles.

National League

Brewers 6, Cubs 3 (12): At Chicago, Milwaukee rallied in the ninth inning against LaTroy Hawkins, then got RBI singles from Junior Spivey and Lyle Overbay in the 12th to beat Chicago. Jorge De La Rosa (1-0) pitched two hitless innings for his first major league victory. Mike Adams threw a perfect 12th for his first career save.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 5: At St. Louis, Larry Walker tied the game with a four-pitch walk from Aaron Fultz in the eighth inning, and Albert Pujols followed with another walk that forced in the go-ahead run in St. Louis’ win over Philadelphia.

Marlins 9, Nationals 0: At Miami, Dontrelle Willis pitched a five-hit shutout and Miguel Cabrera homered twice to lead Florida to a win over Washington.

Braves 3, Mets 1: At Atlanta, New York fell to 0-4 for the first time in 41 years, losing to Atlanta after John Thomson allowed just one run in seven innings.

Astros 3, Reds 2: At Houston, Roger Clemens allowed one run in seven innings and hit a tiebreaking, two-run single to lead Houston over Cincinnati, tying Steve Carlton for ninth place with his 329th win.

Dodgers 8, Diamondbacks 7: At Phoenix, pinch-hitter Jose Valentin had a two-run homer that capped a four-run ninth inning and gave Los Angeles a victory over Arizona.

Pirates 3, Padres 2: At San Diego, Josh Fogg held San Diego to one run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings, and singled and scored to lead Pittsburgh to a win.

Giants 10, Rockies 8: At San Francisco, Marquis Grissom hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and San Francisco survived for a victory over Colorado after blowing a six-run lead.
