Three pitchers rule day in GSL softball

Samantha Skillingstad, Kim Watson and Linse Vlahovich were unhittable Thursday in a wild day of Greater Spokane League softball action.

Skillingstad pitched a perfect game and the Shadle Park Highlanders remained in the hunt for the GSL regular-season crown with a 12-0 romp over the visiting Ferris Saxons (0-8, 0-7 GSL).

Skillingstad struck out 11 as Shadle (6-1, 5-1) remained tied with University and Mt. Spokane atop the standings.

Watson not only pitched a perfect game as the Mead Panthers (5-2, 4-2) routed the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers (1-5, 1-5) 14-0, but she was perfect at the plate, doubling twice in a 3-for-3 day with two runs scored.

Vlahovich fired a no-hitter, with 16 of the 21 outs coming via a strikeout, to lead U-Hi’s Titans (5-1, 5-1) to a 7-0 win over the visiting East Valley Knights (4-4, 3-4). Vlahovich’s only blemish was a two-out walk on a full count in the sixth inning. She retired the fire batters who hit the ball on three popups and a pair of groundouts.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Jackie Purser belted a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and added a solo shot in the fifth to lead the Mt. Spokane Wildcats (5-2, 5-1) to an 18-7 road win over the Rogers Pirates (3-3, 3-3). Kristina DeMello fanned 10 on her way to the victory. … The Cheney Blackhawks (2-5, 2-5) used two doubles, three singles, seven walks and six hit batters to fend off the West Valley Eagles (2-5, 2-4) for a 12-9 road win. … Laura Christianson went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Michelle Tully struck out 16 and issued no walks as the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (6-2, 5-2) defeated the North Central Indians (2-4, 2-4) 5-3. Kelcie Vallies fanned 10 and walked none for the Indians.

Baseball

Marcos Armendariz drove in five runs with a pair of triples to propel the visiting Mt. Spokane Wildcats to a 7-3 victory over the University Titans in Greater Spokane League baseball action. Mark Purser went the distance for the Wildcats (7-1, 6-1). He held the Titans (2-5, 2-5) to six hits, while going 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored. Ken VanSickle was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles to pace U-Hi. … Elsewhere in the GSL, freshman Bud Kittredge gave himself all the runs he would need with a first-inning grand slam as the Ferris Saxons (5-1, 5-0) cruised to a 13-1 road win over the Cheney Blackhawks (1-7, 1-6). Kittredge allowed just one hit and struck out nine in the game called after five innings because of the mercy rule. … Logan Davenport hit for the cycle, driving in three runs en route, and Evan Witt knocked in Sean Carnahan with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as the North Central Indians (4-4, 4-3) rallied from a four-run deficit to upend the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (2-6, 2-5) 7-6. … Mat Peterson and Greg Bradley had two hits apiece and Alex Stanley gave up just five hits in going the distance on the mound as the West Valley Eagles (3-2, 3-2) eked out a 5-4 victory over the East Valley Knights (4-5, 3-4). … Kris Henderson allowed just one earned run in a complete-game six-hitter as the Central Valley Bears (7-2, 5-2) rolled to a 13-3 win over the Mead Panthers (1-4, 1-4). Colton Riddle went 3 for 3 for Mead.

Boys soccer

In Great Northern League action, Lucas Assis had a goal and an assist to lead the Medical Lake Cardinals to a 3-0 road win over the Deer Park Stags. … The Colville Indians scored three times in the first half and then held on for a 3-2 win over the visiting Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls Eagles.

Track and field

Catie Schutzle won three events to help the Shadle Park Highlanders girls sweep a GSL tri-meet against visiting Gonzaga Prep and Cheney. Schutzle won the 100 meters in 12.5 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 6 inches and the triple jump at 36-9 as the Highlanders beat the Bullpups 76.5-72.5 and the Blackhawks 84-65. G-Prep beat Cheney 91-58. G-Prep’s Corinna O’Brien (200, 400) and Erica Chaney (shot put, javelin) were double winners, as were Cheney’s Katie Kimball (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Shadle’s Cami Nelson (800, 1,600). Shadle’s boys swept the Bullpups 78-66 and the Blackhawks 76-69. Cheney beat G-Prep 76-67. Cheney had three double winners: Brett Igbinoba (100, 200), Tyreil Poosri (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Bob Wilske (shot put, discus). Bryan Braman (high jump, long jump) was a double winner for Shadle, as was G-Prep’s Tim Feulner (1,600, 3,200). … Elsewhere in the GSL, the Ferris Saxons girls beat East Valley 81.66-68.33 and U-Hi 104.5-45.5 in a tri-meet at Ferris, thanks to double wins from Jessica Bates (400, 800) and Kristin Miller (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles). Eleaya Schuerch (long jump, triple jump) won twice for the Knights, who beat U-Hi 107-41. EV’s boys won twice, beating Ferris 80-65 and U-Hi 97-48. Ferris defeated the Titans 87-58. Ferris got a pair of wins from Robert Davis (100, 400) and Ben Poffenroth (800, 1,600). U-Hi’s Kevin Martin won both hurdles races, while EV’s Matt Tonani captured the long jump and triple jump. … Lewis and Clark’s boys nipped Central Valley 73-72 and beat West Valley 86-58 in a tri-meet at LC’s Hart Field. CV beat WV 77-68. Double winners were: LC’s Andre Jennings (100, 400) and Justin Hofstee (800, 1,600); WV’s Rashad Toussaint (long jump, triple jump) and Chris Vennum (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles). LC’s girls breezed to a 107-39 win over the Eagles and an 89-61 win over the Bears. Double winners were: CV’s Lisa Haley (both hurdles races), WV’s Emily Sasse (discus, shot put) and LC’s Whitney Porter (1,600, 3,200). … North Central’s boys blasted Clarkston 127-18 and Rogers 108-37 in a tri-meet at Rogers. The Indians had a trio of double winners: Shane Thomas (100, 400), Caleb Johay (800, 1,600) and Mark Simpson (110 hurdles, pole vault). Rogers beat Clarkston 79-43. The NC girls rolled to a 131-19 win over Clarkston and a 117-24 victory over Rogers. Rogers edged the Bantams 72-69. Anna Walters won the 100, 200 and long jump for NC. Teammate Alania Smith won both hurdles races.
