Riggin, Brunelle allow East Valley to hand Ferris its first GSL loss

Brady Brunelle hit his first home run of the season, a three-run blast during East Valley’s six-run fourth inning, and the Knights (5-6, 4-5) handed the visiting Ferris Saxons (7-2, 6-1) their first Greater Spokane League loss of the season, a 6-1 decision on Tuesday.

Bret Riggin held Ferris to six hits, half of them by Casey Brett, to improve his record to 3-1.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Cameron Joslyn struck out nine in five innings, Keith Tappe scored three runs and doubled with the bases loaded, and Luke Raynor homered and walked three times as the Mt. Spokane Wildcats (9-1, 8-1) moved past Ferris into first place with a 10-0 romp over the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers (4-5, 4-3). … Ryne Kiter went 2 for 4 with five RBIs, Josh Powell drove in four runs with two hits, Ian Shook had three hits and three RBIs, and Stewart Toelkin went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four runs scored as the Shadle Park Highlanders (6-2, 5-2) outslugged the visiting Clarkston Bantams 19-9. … Alex Stanley scattered four hits, striking out nine with no walks, and Phil Gannon doubled twice and scored three runs to lead the West Valley Eagles (5-2, 5-2) to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (3-7, 3-6). … Ryan Swanson drove in the winning runs with a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning as the visiting North Central Indians (5-6, 5-4) rallied for a 5-3 win over the Central Valley Bears (7-4, 5-4). … Eric Anthony delivered a two-run single in the top of the ninth to carry the Rogers Pirates (4-4, 3-4) to a 5-3 road win over the Mead Panthers (2-5, 2-5). Pete Birdwell fanned 10 batters in a losing effort for Mead. … Matt Fuller went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Nick Burger allowed just one hit in a five-inning complete game as the University Titans (3-7, 3-6) pounded the visiting Cheney Blackhawks (1-9, 1-8) 15-0. Cheney has lost by 10 runs or more in each of its last four setbacks. … GSL play continues Thursday with the following games: Mead at EV; Cheney vs. LC at Hart Field; NC at Rogers; CV at Shadle; WV at U-Hi; and Clarkston at Ferris for a doubleheader.

•In Great Northern League play, Justin Erwin had three hits, including a solo home run, and scored three runs, and Mitch Riddle went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the first-place Pullman Greyhounds (8-1, 7-1) to a 10-9 road win over the Medical Lake Cardinals (5-4, 3-4). Kelly Wagner went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and B.J. Palmer added two hits and three RBIs for Medical Lake. … Michael McCanna allowed just four hits and struck out eight, Casey Christian drove in three runs with a pair of hits, and Cameron Stroyan had a double and triple among his three hits as the Chewelah Cougars (7-3, 5-2) roughed up the visiting Deer Park Stags (1-9, 1-8) 13-3.

Matt Corra beat an offside trap in the 15th minute to score the lone goal of the match as the Chewalah Cougars nipped the Colville Bulldogs 1-0 in Great Northern League action. Jason Dorow made 19 saves in goal to earn the shutout. Chewelah won despite being outshot 25-4 in the match. … Elsewhere in the GNL, Carl Haas had a goal and two assists and the Pullman Greyhounds breezed to a 4-1 win over the visiting Medical Lake Cardinals. … Brady Ostendorf scored from 6 yards out in the 24th minute to give the Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls Eagles a 1-0 road win over the Riverside Rams.
