Red Sox 8, Orioles 0: At Baltimore, David Wells allowed three hits in eight innings, and Boston got a three-run homer from Jason Varitek in a rout of Baltimore. Wells (2-2) struck out five and walked one, coming within three outs of his first shutout in 63 starts.
White Sox 9, Tigers 1: At Detroit, Joe Crede hit a three-run homer, Jermaine Dye had a two-run drive, Jon Garland pitched eight solid innings and Chicago beat Detroit.
Yankees 11, Blue Jays 2: At Toronto, Carl Pavano scattered seven hits over eight innings to get his first win with New York by defeating Toronto. Jorge Posada hit a three-run homer for the Yankees, who went ahead 7-1 in the fourth.
Rangers 12, Devil Rays 10: At St Petersburg, Fla., Rod Barajas hit his first career grand slam and Kevin Mench had a bases-loaded triple for Texas, which nearly blew an eight-run lead against Tampa Bay.
Twins 5, Royals 4: At Minneapolis, Juan Rincon (2-0) earned the victory with one inning of relief of Johan Santana, and Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his fifth save in Minnesota’s victory over Kansas City. Santana, unbeaten in 19 starts since July 17, started the game less than an hour after the birth of his second child.
Angels 2, Indians 0: At Anaheim, Calif., Bartolo Colon pitched four-hit ball over eight innings and Chone Figgins homered to lead Los Angeles over Cleveland.
National League
Marlins 9, Mets 2: At Miami, Juan Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs to help Florida win its rematch with Aaron Heilman by beating New York. Heilman pitched a one-hitter against the Marlins last Friday.
Nationals 2, Braves 0: At Washington, Zach Day allowed three hits over seven innings and Jose Vidro hit a two-run homer to help Washington defeat Atlanta.
Astros 6, Brewers 1: At Houston, Adam Everett and Craig Biggio led off the first with back-to-back homers, and Roy Oswalt outpitched an ailing Ben Sheets (flu) in Houston’s win over Milwaukee.
Reds 6, Pirates 4: At Cincinnati, Wily Mo Pena hit two homers, including a tiebreaking two-run shot in the seventh in Cincinnati’s win over Pittsburgh. Rich Aurilia also homered twice for the Reds.
Rockies 7, Phillies 4: At Philadelphia, rookie Clint Barmes had four hits to help Colorado beat Philadelphia and stop a 10-game road losing streak that dated to last season.
Cubs 3, Cardinals 1: At St. Louis, Carlos Zambrano came within one out of a complete game for the Cubs, who lost Nomar Garciaparra because of an injured left groin, but held on to defeat St. Louis.
Dodgers 3, Padres 1 (10): At San Diego, Jose Valentin hit a two-run triple with two outs in the 10th to help Los Angeles beat San Diego and win its eighth straight. Duaner Sanchez (1-1) pitched one inning for the win. Yhency Brazoban pitched the 10th for his fourth save.
Diamondbacks 2, Giants 1: At San Francisco, Javier Vazquez pitched seven scoreless innings and Arizona handed Noah Lowry the first loss of his major league career as it defeated San Francisco.
