Ailing Pavano, Johnson will undergo tests
NOTES
The New York Yankees sent ailing pitchers Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson for tests Monday before determining the next step in trying to patch up their depleted rotation.
Pavano was scheduled for two days of tests with Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, and manager Joe Torre said the team probably would have more information tonight.
The right-hander hasn’t pitched since June 27 because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, but rehabilitation apparently hasn’t helped much and the injury could be more serious than originally thought.
Johnson’s next start is in doubt because of back pain, though Torre said the left-hander was feeling better Monday. Johnson had an MRI that showed inflammation of the lumbar spine. He is day to day and will be re-evaluated today.
If the Big Unit can’t make his next turn, the Yankees will need to find a starter for Thursday night against Texas. Torre said it would not be Hideo Nomo, who made his second start last Saturday with Triple-A Columbus and would be on full rest Thursday.
Right-hander Scott Proctor is a possibility.
Foulke throws in bullpen
Red Sox closer Keith Foulke threw in the bullpen for the first time since knee surgery, but isn’t close to coming off the disabled list.
He plans to throw again in the bullpen before home games Wednesday night and Friday night.
“He’s missed some time. He’s had knee surgery,” manager Terry Francona said before Boston’s game against the Texas Rangers. “I think some people are getting carried away” about how soon he will return.
Foulke struggled most of the season before undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage in his left knee July 7.
•The Red Sox recalled third baseman Kevin Youkilis from Triple-A Pawtucket and designated outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. for assignment.
Boston’s need for Youkilis increased when third baseman Bill Mueller experienced back spasms Monday and was removed from the starting lineup.
Cruz was acquired 10 days earlier in a trade with Arizona and went 3 for 12 in four games with no homers and no RBIs for Boston.
Clearing the bases
The Rockies placed reliever Dan Miceli on the 15-day DL with a deep bone bruise on his left foot. … Right-hander Anthony Reyes, the top pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization, will make his major league debut tonight at Milwaukee.
