Three steps to a better home

1. Make your home safer by installing smoke alarms on every level of your house and in bedrooms, and a carbon- monoxide detector near bedrooms.

Supplies: Smoke detectors, carbon-monoxide detector, drill, screwdriver, screws and batteries.

Cost: $75-$150.

Time: One hour.

2. Turn your back yard into a playground for your kids.

Supplies: Swings, trampoline, slide, climbing ropes and-or other playground equipment, hammer, circular saw, square, screwdriver and pliers.

Cost: $100-$2,000 or more.

Time: Two days.

3. Let people know where you live with a new address frame.

Supplies: Decorative metal address frame, ceramic numbers, adhesive and nails, screws or toggle bolts.

Cost: $40-$80.

Time: 30 minutes.
