Red Sox 9, White Sox 8: David Ortiz hit two homers and drove in a career-high six runs to lead Boston from an early four-run deficit to a win over visiting Chicago in a meeting of the A.L.’s two best teams.

Twins 1, Athletics 0: Johan Santana struck out nine Athletics in a masterful three-hitter, sending Dan Haren to his first loss since May 26 in Minnesota’s win at Oakland, Calif. Santana (11-6) got his second shutout of the season and the third of his career, dominating Oakland’s lineup while extending his A.L. strikeouts lead.

Blue Jays 12, Orioles 0: Josh Towers scattered nine hits in his third career complete game, Gregg Zaun homered and drove in five runs, and Toronto cruised to a win in Baltimore.

Devil Rays 8, Indians 6: Jorge Cantu homered and had three RBIs as Tampa Bay snapped a four-game losing streak with a win in Cleveland.

Yankees 6, Rangers 5: Derek Jeter hit another go-ahead home run and New York’s beleaguered bullpen made it hold up as the Yankees sent visiting Texas to its fifth straight loss.

Tigers at Royals, ppd: Detroit’s game against Kansas City was postponed by rain. There was no immediate makeup date announced.

National league

Giants 1, Marlins 0: Noah Lowry pitched 7 1/3 innings and Randy Winn homered in the sixth to help San Francisco beat visiting Florida. Lowry (8-11), who hasn’t allowed a run in his past two starts, gave up just four hits and walked three.

Diamondbacks 8, Braves 0: Tony Clark drove in four runs with his first two-homer game of the season, and Claudio Vargas allowed two hits in seven innings as Arizona won in Atlanta.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 1: Carlos Zambrano allowed six hits in six shutout innings and Michael Barrett had two doubles and a homer as Chicago beat visiting St. Louis.

Nationals 4, Rockies 2: Esteban Loaiza pitched into the seventh inning for his first win in nearly a month and Jose Guillen had a two-run single in the first inning, helping Washington win in Denver.

Astros 6, Pirates 5: Morgan Ensberg hit a tying home run in the eighth inning and Adam Everett scored three batters later on Rob Mackowiak’s throwing error, rallying Houston past visiting Pittsburgh.

Dodgers 7, Mets 6 (10): Dioner Navarro hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th and Oscar Robles went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs as Los Angeles beat visiting New York.

Reds 5, Brewers 3: Luke Hudson pitched six solid innings to remain unbeaten against Milwaukee, leading surging Cincinnati to a win in Milwaukee.

Phillies 3, Padres 2: Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer and Jon Lieber pitched six strong innings, leading Philadelphia to a win in San Diego.
