Selig: Game can fix steroid issue
NOTES
Describing himself as restless and disappointed, Commissioner Bud Selig said Thursday he believes baseball can solve its steroids problem without help from Congress.
“I’ve often said I won’t rest until I rid the sport of steroids,” Selig said following the owners’ quarterly meeting held at a Pasadena, Calif. hotel about 10 miles from Dodger Stadium. “If we can’t solve our problems, then I submit to you the government should do what it has to do.”
Rolen faces decision
Scott Rolen faces a gut-wrenching decision: Have season-ending surgery on his still-ailing left shoulder, or try to play into October far below his best with the team that had the major leagues’ best record.
The St. Louis Cardinals’ All-Star third baseman said he’s been told he has a torn labrum that will require a six-month rehab. He wants to weigh his admittedly dismal options.
Around the league
Texas Rangers reliever Kevin Gryboski was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for “inappropriate actions” following a game against the Boston Red Sox earlier this month.
Major League Baseball announced the suspension, but did not specify what Gryboski did to warrant it.
Gryboski, who took the loss on Aug. 9, became agitated with a couple of calls by plate umpire Derryl Cousins.
•Royals first-round pick Alex Gordon, No. 2 overall, said that he has registered for classes at the University of Nebraska and doesn’t expect to play pro baseball this season.
