No Giveaway pours it on
AUBURN, Wash. – No Giveaway, a 60-1 long shot, rallied from 20 lengths behind on the back stretch to win the Longacres Mile on Sunday at Emerald Downs, the 70th running of the Grade III race.
It was the first Longacres Mile victory for 31-year-old trainer Grant Forster, owner Herman Sarkowsky and jockey Juan Gutierrez.
The 4-year-old son of He’s Top broke from the 10th position. Gutierrez kept him well behind while the leaders, Sabertooth and Flamethrowintexan, raced through swift early fractions of 22 2/5 and 44 4/5 .
The gelding was in fifth place when he started to move between horses when Quiet Cash took the lead atop the stretch. With 1/16 remaining, No Giveaway took the lead and won by three-quarters of a length. He finished in 1:35 3/5 .
“He can go inside or outside,” Gutierrez said. “I was little worried about an 11-horse field with the traffic, but I got through.”
The victory paid the highest return in the history of the Longacres Mile for a winning ticket, $122. No Giveaway paid $122, 42.40 and 14.20. It marked his sixth win in 10 starts and improved his earnings to $223,906.
Quiet Cash paid $19.40 and $8.80 for second place and Desert Boom paid $5.20 for show. The superfecta of $14,926.70 was the highest payout this season and the third highest in Emerald Downs history.
