Twins 1, White Sox 0: At Minneapolis, Jacque Jones ended Freddy Garcia’s no-hit bid with a home run to lead off the eighth inning, and Johan Santana and Minnesota beat Chicago. Santana (13-6) gave up three hits in eight innings to beat Garcia (11-6) in a battle of perhaps Venezuela’s two best pitchers.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4: At New York, Felix Escalona’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth inning gave the Yankees a victory over Toronto and sole possession of the A.L. wild-card lead.

Tigers 4, Athletics 1: At Detroit, Carlos Pena hit two homers and Nate Robertson (6-10) won for the first time in just more than a month as the Tigers beat Oakland for their fifth straight victory.

Angels 7, Orioles 6: At Baltimore, Orlando Cabrera had three hits and three RBIs to back a fine pitching performance by Jarrod Washburn (7-7), and Los Angeles held on to beat the Orioles. Miguel Tejada hit two homers and drove in five runs for Baltimore.

Indians 5, Devil Rays 4: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Coco Crisp hit a two-run triple in a three-run, seventh inning, and Cleveland extended its winning streak to six by overcoming a four-run deficit to beat Tampa Bay.

Red Sox 5, Royals 2: At Kansas City, Mo., David Wells (10-6) maintained his mastery of the Royals in a Boston victory. Wells allowed five hits in five shutout innings for his 11th straight win over the Royals.

National League

Cubs 10, Braves 1: At Chicago, Jerome Williams (4-6) took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and had the first multihit game of his career, and Jeromy Burnitz backed him with a grand slam to lead the Cubs over Atlanta.

Brewers 11, Marlins 2: At Milwaukee, Chris Capuano (14-8) pitched eight strong innings and Carlos Lee homered for the first time in three weeks as the Brewers routed Josh Beckett (12-7) and Florida.

Pirates 10, Cardinals 0: At Pittsburgh, rookie Nate McLouth hit his first career homer and Ty Wigginton had a three-run triple as the Pirates pounded St. Louis.

Reds 6, Nationals 2: At Washington, Luke Hudson (5-6) allowed four hits over a career-best seven innings to lead Cincinnati past the Nationals.

Mets 14, Diamondbacks 1: At Phoenix, Ramon Castro drove in a career-high five runs and David Wright went 3 for 3 and scored four runs as New York beat Arizona.

Padres 2, Astros 0: At San Diego, Jake Peavy (11-6) outdueled boyhood idol Roger Clemens (11-6), throwing a four-hitter for his third shutout this season as San Diego edged Houston.

Dodgers 8, Rockies 3: At Los Angeles, Jeff Weaver (12-8) won his fifth straight decision and drove in three runs to lead the Dodgers past Colorado.

Phillies 10, Giants 2: At San Francisco, rookie Ryan Howard had a career-high four hits and three RBIs, and Vicente Padilla (7-11) pitched eight strong innings to lead Philadelphia past the Giants.
