Annual football preview section arrives Thursday

Joe Palmquist The Spokesman-Review

Being a college student can be demanding.

Being a college student and a college football player adds a whole new layer of difficulty.

So what happens when the student/college football player gets married?

It’s a unique combination and one we decided to explore for our annual football preview section, which will be inserted into Thursday’s paper.

Washington State quarterback Josh Swogger, Eastern Washington University tight end Tim Calhoun, Idaho wide receiver Christan Populis and Washington quarterback Carl Bonnell are all juggling college academics, football and married life.

For our cover story, staff writer Glenn Kasses talks to players, spouses and coaches about this chosen path. Finances and time management are big issues with this rare group.

We also preview each team and include lineups, schedules, pinpoint weak spots and strengths and take a team-by-team look at the conferences.

The Seattle Seahawks will also be previewed in the special section and staff writer Jim Meehan chats with recently wed Chris Spencer, the Seahawks No. 1 draft pick.

The entire section will be posted online at www.spokesmanreview.com/sports. For all the latest news and inside information on area college football, check out our blogs at www.spokesmanreview.com/blogs.

Remember, while we do charge non-subscribers a small monthly fee for stories that appear in the paper, original online content such as the blogs are free.

High school football

On Wednesday, look for our preview of the Greater Spokane League. In the Idaho edition, we will preview the Inland Empire League. Those two big-school leagues clash this week with University hosting Lake City on Wednesday and a slew of border clashes on Friday.

On Thursday and Friday, small-school football will be previewed.

Be sure to check out our high school sports coverage online. We post scores as soon as we know them and also provide statistics, schedules and stories.

Cleaner look

When we converted to our new computer system, many readers complained the type was difficult to read.

We tweaked the old font a bit and it improved the readability, but it could still be better.

It won’t happen overnight, but the process of finding the right font that won’t take up too much space has begun.

Sometime in the near future, you should see a dramatic change.
