Researchers at Washington State University and the University of Idaho are trying to produce the ideal Christmas tree in an effort to slow the movement toward artificial trees.

They’re looking for a tree that stays fresher, lasts longer and smells more Christmasy than other varieties. Helping growers improve their offerings will keep people from buying fake trees and, ultimately, improve the regional economy, they say.
