Nagy propels Coyotes past Hurricanes

Ladislav Nagy had three goals and two assists, and the Phoenix Coyotes scored six times in the first 31 minutes en route to an 8-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night in Glendale, Ariz.

Mike Johnson, who had only five goals in his first 26 games, also scored twice for the Coyotes. Phoenix had its best offensive night of the season.

Nagy’s five points are a career high. His second career hat trick helped the Coyotes tie their mark for most goals in a game since the franchise moved to Phoenix. They set the record with an 8-2 win at Anaheim on Dec. 22, 1999.

Mike Comrie, Geoff Sanderson and Zbynek Michalek also scored for the Coyotes, who have won five of seven. Curtis Joseph made 24 saves and recorded his 408th NHL win, moving him past Glenn Hall into seventh place on the career list.

Capitals 5, Rangers 1: Rookie Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and three assists, Olaf Kolzig stopped 37 shots, and the Capitals ended New York’s six-game winning streak with a victory in Washington.

Kolzig lost a bid for his 34th career shutout when Petr Prucha scored a power-play goal with 1:43 left.

Canadiens 3, Kings 2: Pierre Dagenais scored twice and Jan Bulis got a short-handed goal early in the third, sending the Canadiens to a win over Los Angeles in Montreal.

Montreal snapped a season-high, four-game losing streak.

Los Angeles took a 2-1 lead early in the second on goals by Eric Belanger and Jeff Cowan 2:15 apart. The Kings have lost a season-high four straight.

Sharks 5, Maple Leafs 4: Joe Thornton had two assists for the second straight night with his new team, helping San Jose rally to a victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Alyn McCauley scored twice for the Sharks, who ended a 10-game losing streak Friday with a 5-0 win at Buffalo – Thornton’s debut with San Jose after being traded by Boston on Wednesday.

Mark Smith, Scott Hannon, Patrick Marleau had the other goals for the Sharks.

Darcy Tucker, Eric Lindros, Matt Stajan and Jason Allison scored for the Maple Leafs.

Flames 3, Penguins 2: Daymond Langkow scored twice in less than two minutes early in the third period and Calgary won in Pittsburgh for the first time in nearly 16 years.

Kristian Huselius, acquired Friday from Florida in a three-player deal, enjoyed a big debut game in Calgary’s 12th win in 15 games. He set up all three goals, including assists on Langkow’s goals on successive shifts.

Devils 3, Wild 2 (SO): Viktor Kozlov tied the game late in the third period and scored the only goal in the shootout to lead New Jersey to a victory over Minnesota in East Rutherford, N.J.

Martin Brodeur stopped Todd White, Brian Rolston and Marian Gaborik in the shootout, and finished with 37 saves.

Panthers 4, Blackhawks 3 (OT): Olli Jokinen scored a power-play goal at 3:57 of overtime to give Florida a win over Chicago in Sunrise, Fla.

Nathan Horton scored twice to help the Panthers send Chicago to its fifth straight road loss.

Predators 4, Flyers 3 (SO): Paul Kariya scored Nashville’s second goal in the shootout and the Predators beat Philadelphia in Nashville, Tenn., for the franchise’s 200th NHL victory.

Kariya, 3 for 3 in shootout attempts, also had a goal and assist in regulation.

Bruins 5, Oilers 4 (OT): David Tanabe scored his first goal of the season in overtime as Boston edged host Edmonton.

Tanabe won it just 30 seconds before the game would’ve gone to a shootout. Brad Boyes had a career-high two goals as the Bruins won their second straight since trading captain Joe Thornton to San Jose.

Mighty Ducks 2, Thrashers 1: Andy McDonald scored the winning goal on a power play with 4:29 left and Ilya Bryzgalov made 20 saves to lead Anaheim over visiting Atlanta.

McDonald’s shot from the right circle eluded goalie Michael Garnett less than two minutes after Brad Larsen scored on a rebound to tie it at 1.

The NHL suspended Ottawa’s Zdeno Chara for one game and fined coach Bryan Murray $10,000 for Chara’s fight with Kings defenseman Tim Gleason during a win over Los Angeles on Friday. … The New York Islanders recalled defenseman Bruno Gervais and forwards Kevin Colley and Wyatt Smith from Bridgeport of the AHL and sent down struggling forward Robert Nilsson. … Penguins goaltender Sebastien Caron cleared waivers and was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. … The Dallas Stars assigned injured left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate in Iowa.
