Flyers outlast Flames for shootout win

Associated Press

Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki could feel the anticipation of the crowd before the first shootout in Philadelphia.

He used the energy to his advantage.

Mike Richards scored the lone goal and Niittymaki was perfect through regulation, overtime and the shootout to lift the Flyers to a 1-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

“The crowd was loud and I think it helped me get focused,” Niittymaki said. “I really concentrated hard because I wanted to give them a win.”

It was the NHL’s first scoreless game decided by shootout. Only one other game this season went to overtime without a goal, but San Jose scored in the extra session to win 1-0 at Anaheim on Nov. 4.

Niittymaki made 28 saves in regulation and overtime. Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made 37 saves.

Hurricanes 6, Mighty Ducks 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Kevyn Adams scored twice in the first period and added a short-handed goal on a breakaway for his second career hat trick as Carolina beat Anaheim.

Kings 2, Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Dustin Brown scored twice as Los Angeles ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Toronto.

Red Wings 5, Devils 2: At Detroit, Brendan Shanahan had two goals and moved into 15th place on the NHL’s career list, leading Detroit past New Jersey.

Islanders 6, Blues 3: At St. Louis, Mike York scored two goals and added three assists for his second career five-point game as New York beat St. Louis.

Sharks 5, Thrashers 3: At San Jose, Calif., Joe Thornton assisted on his new team’s first goal, then scored later in the opening period to lead San Jose past Atlanta.
