High school challenge food drive – in collaboration with KHQ Success By 6 Family Food Drive, local high school students are invited to collect nonperishable food items for the Second Harvest Food Bank and compete for the title of most food per student. Winner will receive a trophy to be put on display at their school for a year. United Nations Association of Spokane Annual National Essay Contest – For students in grades 9-12. Write a letter to the President of the United States answering the following questions: What is the most important aspect of the United Nations reform and why? What position should the U.S. government take on this aspect of the United Nations reform? Essays must be typed, doubled-spaced, 1,500 words or less, included with citations of all source material. One local winner will receive $50 prize; national winners will received $3,000, and airfare and accommodations to attend the United Nations Association – USA’s Member’s Day in the spring. The Interamerican University Studies Institute programs – Two programs available in Latin America for high school students between the ages of 15-17. Both programs provide Spanish immersion, and in addition “Costa Rica Pura ¡Vida!” focuses on biology, and “Artes en Mexico” is an opportunity to work with professional Mexican art teaches.
