Defense carries Cougars

SAN DIEGO – Washington State held San Diego State without a field goal for a stretch of more than 16 minutes in the second half Saturday and went on to post a 60-49 victory at Cox Arena in the second game of the San Diego Slam.

San Diego beat Fresno State 72-61 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Robbie Cowgill had 12 points and seven rebounds for WSU (5-2). Derrick Low added 11 points and Caleb Forrest 10.

Marcus Slaughter had his third straight double-double with 26 points and 17 rebounds for San Diego State (4-4).

Washington State, which trailed 27-21 at the half, outscored the Aztecs 24-11 to take a 45-38 lead with 7:41 left in the game.

San Diego State pulled to within three points (48-45) with 2:46 remaining on a pair of free throws by John Sharper, but WSU went on a 12-4 run to end the game.
