Spokane’s Maring, Harris nominated to national teams

Two Spokane members of the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School Freeride Team have been nominated to USA Snowboard Association national teams.

Cameron Maring, an eighth-grader at West Valley City School, and his coach, Mark Harris, received the nominations and now go through a final selection process for appointment to the national teams.

Maring qualified by placing third in the USASA nationals this year in the boardercross event.

Harris has been a snowboard coach for more than 10 years, receiving the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Coach of the Year award in 2002.

College scene

Sara Fairburn, a freshman on the Simpson University women’s basketball team from Spokane, was named the California Pacific Conference player of the week.

The 6-foot forward, a graduate of Northwest Christian, averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games, including two conference-opening wins. She had a 10-for-15 shooting game and 24 points, a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) and a 17-point game. She’s averaging 14.2 points and 6.9 rebounds for the Lady Hawks.

Hillary Chisholm, a Whitman College senior from Coeur d’Alene (Lake City), was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America college division second team in women’s soccer.

She has a 3.9 grade-point average majoring in art history and visual studies.

Ben Sawyer, a Gonzaga junior from Mead, was named to the West Coast Conference all-academic team for men’s soccer. He has a 3.53 GPA majoring in accounting.

Football

Dan Antonietti became the 14th member of the Spokane College Football Officials Association selected for a postseason assignment when he was named to work the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., Dec. 30 between South Carolina and Missouri.

Tim Davis of the SCFOA, who worked quarterfinal playoffs in NAIA and NCAA Division I-AA, received a third berth when he was worked Friday’s I-AA championship game in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Golf

Aaron Pohle of Spokane, a 2004 graduate of Shadle Park who is attending Spokane Falls Community College, has signed a national letter of intent with Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

Pohle, a four-year member of the Shadle varsity while in high school, will enroll as a junior at Rocky Mountain next fall. He had a 76.5 stroke average in 13 rounds for SFCC this fall.

Track and field

Two brothers from Buena Park, Calif., Brian and Justin Woods, have signed financial aid agreements and will compete for Washington State starting in January, Cougars coach Rick Sloan announced.

Both are sprinters.

Brian attended Fullerton College and Long Beach City College before transferring to WSU. As a senior at Los Alamitos High, he was the CIF-Southern Section Division I champion in the 100 and 200 meters, running a school-record 10.55 100.

Justin, a 2005 graduate of Los Alamitos, is a two-time state qualifier who has run a 21.01 200, 10.48 100 and 48.66 400.

Volleyball

Kelly Scott, who helped lead Moscow, Idaho, to a 24-0 record and State 4A championship, has signed a letter of intent with Lewis-Clark State, Warriors coach Erin Mellinger announced.

The 5-foot-11 Scott, an outside hitter/middle blocker, had 244 kills, 70 blocks and 33 service aces for the Bears and was first-team All-Inland Empire League and second-team all-state.
