Benefit event – Christian Youth Theater is hosting a benefit to raise money to help replace costumes and sets lost in a recent fire, 6 p.m., Wednesday at The Met downtown. The evening, titled “Encore, Encore! The Stars are Out Tonight,” showcases numbers from last season’s shows and live and silent auctions. Tickets are $20, call 487-6540 for reservations.

Model railroad display – Check out 1,000 feet of mainline and a 300-foot branch line with miniature bridges, cities, towns and more, 7-9:30 p.m. Thursday at 11811 E. First. The display is hosted by the River City Model Railroaders; 939-5845.

New Year’s Eve dance – The Country Jammers will perform beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Tri-Community Grange, one block north of Trent on Starr Road. No admission charge, but people can bring snacks to share; 926-3803.

German American Society – The group will host a New Year’s Eve party beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at Deutsches Haus, 25 W. Third. The evening includes dinner, music and dancing for those age 21 and over. The cost is $15. Reservations are required; 325-1113.

Spokane City Forum – The monthly luncheon features Spokesman-Review editor Steven Smith speaking on “A Question of Values: Why Healthy Communities Requires a Healthy Press,” 11:45 a.m. Jan. 18 at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar. Tickets are $8.50 for adults or $5 for students. Reservations are required; 777-1555.
