Eagles stumble at Boise
BOISE – Coby Karl scored 16 points, including two free throws with 5.6 seconds left, to lead Boise State to a 76-72 non-conference men’s basketball victory over mistake-plagued Eastern Washington Thursday night.
Boise State (7-4), of the Western Athletic Conference, scored 27 points off 25 Eastern Washington turnovers and overcame a 34-point scoring effort by Eagles freshman Rodney Stuckey, who played 36 minutes. Stuckey hit 10 for 21 from the field, including 6 for 9 from 3-point range.
With Boise State leading 74-72 with 23 seconds left, the Broncos’ Matt Bauscher missed a pair of free throws and Stuckey brought the ball up court for a final shot and chance for an Eagles victory.
But Karl intercepted a pass and was fouled to get to the line to shoot the final free throws, ensuring the victory.
Boise State had four players in double figures: Eric Lane added 14 points and Kareem Lloyd and Seth Robinson had 12 each.
EWU (5-7), of the Big Sky Conference, held a 41-23 rebounding advantage, with Paul Butorac and Stuckey pulling down eight each.
But the Eagles had no other players in double-figure scoring.
BSU had 14 steals.
