Esther Staub

Shoreline, Wash.

Memorial service for Esther M. Staub, 81, will be today at 2 p.m. at Garland Avenue Alliance Church, Spokane. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Spokane. Beck’s Funeral Home in Edmonds, Wash. is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Staub, who was born in Bend, Ore., died Wednesday.

She was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Portland, Simmons Bible College in Seattle and Nyack College in New York.

Mrs. Staub moved to Spokane in 1966 with her husband, C. Richard Staub Sr., while he led the congregation as pastor of Garland Avenue Alliance Church.

The couple moved to the San Francisco area in 1979, and after Mr. Staub’s retirement in 1987, they returned to Spokane.

She led many Bible studies at Garland Avenue Alliance Church, was a speaker at the Congress of Missions at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1948 and was part of Christian Women’s program on KMBI radio in Spokane.

Mrs. Staub and her husband moved to Shoreline in 2000.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years; two sons, C. Richard Staub Jr. of Seattle and Timothy Staub of Spokane; two daughters, Becky Skellie of Colorado Springs and Ruthy Martin of Ellensburg; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Ferguson

Spokane

Funeral for Evelyn Ferguson, 77, was Monday at the Convent of the Holy Names. Committal will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Ferguson, who died on Wednesday, was born in Sandpoint and attended high school in Dover, Idaho, and Sandpoint.

After high school, she was the assistant superintendent of schools for Bonner County and later attended Holy Names College in Spokane.

A nun, she took her vows as Sister James Robert in 1952.

She taught music at Holy Names Academy here and in Seattle and at Fort Wright College.

She played the piano and studied in London, Paris and Rome. She also studied biology, astronomy and particle physics to better understand creation and to help the survival of living things.

Survivors include a brother, Bob Ferguson of Richland, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Holy Names Retirement Fund.

Gerald Ray Hall

Spokane

Funeral for Gerald Ray Hall, 59, was Monday at the Mountain View Assembly of God Church. Internment followed the ceremony at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Hall, who died Wednesday, was born in Vasalia, Calif., and was a longtime resident of Spokane.

He was a long haul truck driver and enjoyed fishing and camping.

Survivors include a brother, Sam Hall of California, four sisters, Cora Johnson of California, Blanch Long of Oklahoma, Lavon Reeves of Missouri and Doris Ward of Spokane; two daughters, Donna Hernandez and Crystal Tramel, both of Redding, Calif.; six grandchildren, four nephews and 13 grand-nieces and nephews.

Agnes Louise Hacker

Spokane

Funeral service for Agnes Louis Hacker, 87, was held Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Private interment followed the ceremony. Hennessey Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Hacker, who died last Tuesday, was born in Spangle and was a lifetime resident of the area.

She was an industrial worker at a box manufacturer and was an active member of the German American Club.

Survivors include five nieces and several grandnieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the St. Joseph Care Center.

Delphine Anderson

St. Maries

Service for Delphine Anderson, 75, will be today at 1 p.m. at Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Compton, Calif., died Friday.

She attended school in Redding, Calif., and graduated from high school in Sparks, Nev.

She then worked as a 21 card dealer in Reno, where she married Bill Anderson in 1965.

The couple traveled while he served with the military and had lived in Long Beach, Calif., where she worked as a nurses’ aide, then for two years in Hawaii, where she was a gasoline station cashier, and then for three years in Yokuska, Japan, where she continued working as a gasoline station cashier.

The couple finally settled in China Lake, Calif., until his military retirement and moved to St. Maries in 1978.

Mrs. Anderson worked for Ernie Pendell for 13 years and then owned Delphine Dollar Store for three years until her retirement.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Joseph Ashby of Portland and Charles Irish of St. Maries; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Floyd ‘Bud’ Harvey

Steptoe, Wash.

Service for Floyd ‘Bud” Ernest Harvey, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash. Burial will be at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe.

Mr. Harvey, who died Friday, was a lifetime resident of Steptoe.

He graduated from Steptoe High School in 1942 and attended Washington State College before joining the Marines in 1943.

He served in the South Pacific, where he was awared a Purple Heart.

After his discharge, Mr. Harvey returned to Steptoe and married Beverly Greer in Oakesdale, Wash., in 1948.

He farmed near Steptoe and Oakesdale, retiring in 1990.

Mr. Harvey enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an accomplished trap-shooter. He was a past president of the Washington State Trap-Shooters, where he was also on the high average trapshooting team for five years.

He was a member of Steptoe Grange, Steptoe Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy Kelly of Omak, Wash.; a son, David Harvey of Chehalis, Wash.; a sister, Irene Nash of Olympia; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Bethel Cemetery.

Janice (Camm) Johnson

Chandler, Ariz.

Memorial service for Janice Helen (Camm) Johnson, 64, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel, with a gathering at the Kellogg Elks Lodge. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Kingston, Idaho.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Spokane, died Jan. 24.

She grew up in the Silver Valley and attended schools in Pinehurst and Kingston, Idaho, and served as the manager of the Sands Motel in Smelterville, Idaho, for eight years.

She then moved to Chandler and become involved with the Esther Rebekah Lodge and held every available position over the years.

Mrs. Johnson served as noble grand master for Arizona and did work for Rebekah Lodge nationally and internationally while on her travels.

She married Douglas Johnson in 1987. He survives her.

Other survivors include five sons, Rick Jemison of Hauser Lake, Idaho, Jim George of Post Falls, Ed Johnson of Coeur d’Alene, Scott Johnson of Chandler and Geoff Johnson of Pinehurst; her parents, Fred and Helen Camm of Pinehurst; a brother, Jack Camm of Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara Camm of Kingston; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Esther Rebekah Lodge.

Phyllis (Curl) Lucas

Elko, Nev.

Service for Phyllis June Lucas, 58, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Lucas, who was born in Baxter Springs, Kan., died Saturday.

She attended school in Wallace and later received a degree in floral arrangement.

Mrs. Lucas had worked as a bartender at various lounges in the Silver Valley.

She married James Lucas in1974. They moved to Nevada in 1994.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; two daughters, Kimberly Lucas-Hanson of Jennings, La., and Jennifer Red of Elko, Nev.; three brothers, Jack Curl of Ulysses, Kan., Charles Curl of Wallace and Donald Curl of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; five sisters, Helen Schupman of Carollton, Texas, Pauline Goodwin of Westville, Okla., Betty Miller of Silverton, Idaho, Sharon Blythe of Edson, Kan., and Linda Stanley of Tacoma; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Center.

Joan (Richardson) Whalen

St. Maries

Memorial service for Joan M. (Richardson) Whalen, 59, was Jan. 29 at the Assembly of God Church in Pinehurst, Idaho. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Whalen, who was born in Wallace, died Jan. 4.

She grew up in Kellogg and as a young woman lived on and off in the Silver Valley.

She married Joseph Whalen Jr. in 1974, and the couple divorced in 1976.

Mrs. Whalen worked for J.R. Simplot Co. in Hermiston, Ore., and returned to Kellogg in 1991.

She settled in St. Maries in 1994.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in Portland.

Mrs. Whalen enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley.

Survivors include four children, Joseph Whalen III of Austin, Texas, Shawn Whalen of Pinehurst, Idaho, Donna O’Neill of Kellogg and Billie Jo Tucker of Spokane; a brother, Gary Richardson of Coeur d’Alene; and five grandchildren.

Keith Terris

Spokane Valley

Burial Mass for Keith V. Terris, 53, will be today at 10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery after the ceremony. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Terris, who died last Tuesday, was born in Spokane and graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School in 1969.

A dedicated athlete, Mr. Terris played for Toby’s in the Spokane Amateur Hockey League, played basketball in high school and enjoyed bird hunting and fishing.

He worked as a glazier at Spokane Valley Glass and later in janitorial services at Greenacres Elementary School.

Survivors include his mother, Donna Marie Terris Franke; two brothers, John Terris and Kevin Terris; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Betty (Porter) McKinley

Kellogg

Memorial service for Betty Bertha McKinley, 85, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Kellogg with inurnment to be at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McKinley, who was born in Syracuse, N.Y., died Saturday.

She lived in Yakima before moving to the Silver Valley in 1938 and married Roy McKinley in 1940. He died in 1998.

Mrs. McKinley worked at Patano’s clothing store for many years.

She was a member of the Kellogg Lady Elks and enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include three sons, Tom McKinley of Kellogg, Bill McKinley of Missoula and Richard McKinley of Palmer, Alaska; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
