Man killed in shootout near Marysville school

Associated Press

MARYSVILLE, Wash. – Police shot and killed a reportedly despondent, armed man Wednesday after he emerged from a house across the street from a school and fired shots, a police spokesman said.

Marysville Junior High School was locked down earlier in the day when police responded to reports that the man was suicidal and armed. Neighbors reported seeing the man Wednesday morning with a gun in his mouth, KOMO-TV reported.

Police said the 39-year-old man began firing gunshots at officers when he came out of the house. Officers returned fire and the man was killed. No officers were injured.

No students were threatened or harmed, and afternoon classes followed a normal schedule, said Assistant Superintendent Gail Miller.
