Winter Hawks prevail in OT

PORTLAND – Brandon Dubinsky corralled a loose puck outside Spokane’s blue line and wristed it past goaltender Kevin Opsahl 25 seconds into overtime Friday night to lead the Portland Winter Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the Spokane Chiefs.

Spokane (19-25-8-2) remains tied for fourth place in the Western Conference U.S. Division with the Tri-City Americans (20-25-5-3) with 48 points. Tri-City was a 2-1 winner at Everett on Friday night.

Portland (24-23-4-4) is in third place with 56 points, two points behind Everett (25-22-6-2).

Derek Ryan had a goal and an assist while Joe Logan assisted on two goals for Spokane.

Portland opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 17 minutes, 13 seconds of the first period when Kyle Bailey scored his eighth goal of the season.

Darrell May made it 2-0 on another power-play goal, 1:26 into the second period.

Spokane answered with two goals – Ryan on the power play at 6:43 and Gustav Engman 27 seconds before the end of the period.

The teams exchanged goals 1:25 apart in the third period – Michael Grabner scoring for Spokane – before Dubinsky’s goal gave Portland its sixth win in seven outings, and its first win over Spokane since Oct. 6.
