Matt Brunell poured in 18 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, sparking Cheney to a 63-51 victory over Clarkston to claim the Greater Spokane League’s No. 2 seed into next week’s 3A regional tourney.

The Bantams are the No. 3 seed.

The 6-foot-6 junior center converted on 11 of 15 shots from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line, while pulling down five rebounds and blocking six shots.

The Blackhawks (12-10) amassed 17 assists on 22 field goals.

Jason Curtis and Ryan Turnbow scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Bantams (9-13).

1A District 7

Freeman Yakima-bound

Freeman can pack its bags for Yakima. The Scotties qualified for the State 1A tournament by beating Kettle Falls, 66-49, at Mead. Malcolm Soelberg scored 20 points, shooting 8 for 14 from the field, to lead Freeman (20-2). Kettle Falls (13-9) plays Colfax in a winner-to-state game Tuesday. The winner plays Freeman for seeding. … Colfax 65, Newport 46: Colfax tamed the Grizzlies in the first half of the loser-out game, building a 34-18 lead. Brian Danaher scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs pulled away. David McFall paced Newport (4-17) with 25 points. Colfax (8-14) plays Kettle Falls on Tuesday for a berth in the State 1A tourney.

Hornets sting LR

Oroville staged a fourth-quarter comeback to nip Lake Roosevelt 55-54 in Brewster. Matt Pleasants scored 16 points to lead the Raiders, who play Tonasket on Wednesday in a loser-out game at Brewster. The winner of that game plays the loser of Wednesday’s championship game Friday for a state berth.

B District 9

Nighthawks win easily

Tekoa-Oakesdale went on a 22-11 run in the fourth quarter to seal a 61-43 victory over Tri-Cities Prep at Walla Walla. Derek Flock scored 23 points and Bobby Ellis added another 14 to lead the Nighthawks (17-5). … LaCrosse-Washtucna 52, Liberty Christian 39: The Tigercats (18-4) started the game on a 17-6 run and never looked back. Matt Martin led the LaCrosse-Washtucna effort, pouring in 18 points, with Craig Koller adding 13 points. … St. John-Endicott 66, Waitsburg 43: Kurt Bowen scored 19 points and Bryce Johnson added 14 points to lead the Eagles (15-10) past the Cardinals in a loser-out game.
