Shogren, Bielec propel Pirates

The Whitworth Pirates rode the hot hands of Sarah Shogren and Dani Bielec to a 60-53 victory over the Whitman Missionaries in a Northwest Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night in Walla Walla.

Shogren scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Bielic nailed all six of her shots from the floor in a 14-point effort.

Whitworth (21-3, 12-3 NWC) connected at a 54-percent clip (21 of 39) from the field for the game, while holding Whitman (13-11, 8-7) to 37 percent (21 of 57).

Men’s basketball

Bryan Williams hit three 3-pointers on his way to 17 points and Lance Pecht added 14 points and five rebounds to carry the Whitworth Pirates (12-11, 8-7) to a 76-59 win over the Whitman Missionaries (5-19, 3-12) in Northwest Conference play at Walla Walla.

Jon Young chipped in with 11 points for the Whits, who jumped out to a 35-20 lead at the half.

Erik Kofler score a game-high 19 for Whitman.

Junior hockey

The Castlegar Rebels had five different players find the net and breezed to a 5-1 victory over the Spokane Braves in Game 4 of a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League first-round playoff game at Planet Ice.

The victory gives Castlegar a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series and a chance to wrap things up at home on Thursday night.

Evan Witt’s second-period goal was the lone tally for Spokane.

Braves goaltender Ryan Skier stopped 18 shots, while Castlegar goalie Graham Fleming turned away 27.

Spokane backup goaltender Jason Greenwell was named Rookie of the Year on Monday.
