Sasquatch men edge Big Bend to win 1st basketball title since 1992

Jeremy Mangum scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures Wednesday as Community Colleges of Spokane edged host Big Bend CC 71-70 at Moses Lake to win its first NWAACC East Division men’s basketball title since 1992.

The Sasquatch (21-8, 11-3) will play the North Division No. 4 team when the conference tournament begins March 3 in Kennewick. Big Bend (18-9, 9-5) lost a chance at tying for first when Bryce Pendleton missed the front end of a one-and-one with nine-tenths of a second left.

Women’s basketball

Jackie Albi hit two free throws with 1 second left and Rachel Crane stole the ensuing inbounds pass as CCS (16-13, 9-5) topped Big Bend CC 48-47 at Moses Lake to tie for fourth place in the NWAACC East.

The Sasquatch will play Wenatchee on Saturday for the East’s fourth and final seed to the conference tourney.

Baseball

Caleb Reaber hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to lift Whitworth (2-1) to a 9-7 win over host Central Washington (3-6) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Ellensburg. Adam Kemp (1-0) threw five scoreless innings and Troy Martin had a two-run single in a five-run fourth as CWU won the second game 7-2.
